Thinking: Hannah Arendt: Hannah Arendt is a 2012 German-Luxembourgian-French biographical drama film directed by Margarethe von Trotta and starring Barbara Sukowa. The film centers in the life of German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt’s response to the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann, which she covered for The New Yorker. Her writing on the trial became controversial for its depiction of both Eichmann and the Jewish councils, and for its introduction of Arendt’s now-famous concept of “the banality of evil”. Hannah Arendt speech on thinking: “Since Socrates and Plato, we usually call thinking “to be engaged in that silent dialogue between me and myself.” In refusing to be a person, Eichmann utterly surrendered that single most defining human quality: that of being able to think. And consequently, he was no longer capable of making moral judgments. This inability to think created the possibility for many ordinary men to commit evil deeds on a gigantic scale, the like of which one had never seen before. It is true. I have considered these questions in a philosophical way. The manifestation of the wind of thought is not knowledge, but the ability to tell right from wrong, beautiful from ugly. And I hope that thinking gives people the strength to prevent catastrophes in these rare moments when the chips are down.” James Tilly Mathews: James Tilly Matthews was rotting in a French dungeon when he heard (or thought he heard) this fateful question from a fellow prisoner: “Mr. Matthews, are you acquainted with the art of talking with your brains?” – Village Voice: Genius of Bedlam

Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev (19 December 1906 (O.S. 6 December) – 10 November 1982) was the General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), presiding over the country from 1964 until his death in 1982. His eighteen-year term as General Secretary was second only to that of Joseph Stalin in duration. During Brezhnev’s rule, the global influence of the Soviet Union grew dramatically, in part because of the expansion of the Soviet military during this time. His tenure as leader was marked by the beginning of an era of economic and social stagnation in the Soviet Union. Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov (15 June [O.S. 2 June] 1914 – 9 February 1984) was a Soviet politician, Chairman of the KGB, and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 12 November 1982 until his death fifteen months later. Field Marshall Mikhail Kutuzov at Borodino: Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov (16 September [O.S. 5 September] 1745 – 28 April [O.S. 16 April] 1813) was a Field Marshal of the Russian Empire. He served as one of the finest military officers and diplomats of Russia under the reign of three Romanov Tsars: Catherine II, Paul I and Alexander I. His military career was closely associated with the rising period of Russia from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Kutuzov contributed much to the military history of Russia and is considered to have been one of the best Russian generals under the reign of Catherine II. He took part in the suppression of the Bar Confederation’s uprising, in three of the Russo-Turkish Wars and in the Napoleonic War, including two major battles at Austerlitz and the battle of Borodino. However, Kutuzov is credited most with his leadership during the French invasion of Russia. Under Kutuzov’s command, the Russian army faced the Grande Armée at the Battle of Borodino and later counter-attacked once Napoleon retreated from Moscow, pushing the French out of the Russian homeland. In recognition of this, Kutuzov was awarded the victory title of Prince Smolensky. A memorial was built at Moscow in 1973 to commemorate the 1812 war and Kutuzov’s leadership. An order of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation is also named after him. Kutuzov was highly regarded in the works of Russian and Soviet historians.

25 July 2000: Crash of Concorde: Air France Flight 4590 was an Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde, registration F-BTSC, on a scheduled international flight from Charles de Gaulle, Paris, France, to New York City, on 25 July 2000, local time 16:43 CET. The Air France Flight 4590 Concord crashed into a field next to a hotel; after taking off from Paris airport; on 25 July 2000; was the result of the tyre running over an L-shaped titanium alloy strip – that had dislodged from a Continental Airlines DC-10 departing for Newark, New Jersey, during takeoff from the same runway; when a rivet popped – that punctured the tyre, a chunk of tyre debris struck a wing that sent out a pressure shockwave that ruptured a fuel tank and leaking fuel ignited. The fire caused damage to the port wing, which began to disintegrate — melted by the extremely high temperatures. Engine one and two lost power. Engine one surged again, but this time failed to recover. Due to the asymmetric thrust, the starboard wing lifted, banking the aircraft to over 100 degrees. The crew reduced the power on engines three and four in an attempt to level the aircraft, but with falling airspeed they lost control and the aircraft stalled, crashing into the field next to the Hôtelissimo Les Relais Bleus Hotel in the town of Gonesse. The flight was chartered by German company Peter Deilmann Cruises; the passengers were on their way to board the cruise ship MS Deutschland in New York City for a 16-day cruise to Manta, Ecuador. Vladimir Mayakovsky & Lily Brik Urievna Kagan:Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (July 19 [O.S. July 7] 1893 – 14 April 1930) was a Russian Soviet poet, playwright, artist, and actor. During his early, pre-Revolution period leading into 1917, Mayakovsky became renowned as a prominent figure of the Russian Futurist movement; being among the signers of the Futurist manifesto, A Slap in the Face of Public Taste (1913), and authoring poems such as A Cloud in Trousers (1915) and Backbone Flute (1916). Mayakovsky produced a large and diverse body of work during the course of his career: he wrote poems, wrote and directed plays, appeared in films, edited the art journal LEF, and created agitprop posters in support of the Communist Party during the Russian Civil War. Though Mayakovsky’s work regularly demonstrated ideological and patriotic support for the ideology of the Communist Party and a strong admiration of Lenin, Mayakovsky’s relationship with the Soviet state was always complex and often tumultuous. Mayakovsky often found himself engaged in confrontation with the increasing involvement of the Soviet State in cultural censorship and the development of the State doctrine of Socialist realism. Works that contained criticism or satire of aspects of the Soviet system, such as the poem “Talking With the Taxman About Poetry” (1926), and the plays The Bedbug (1929) and The Bathhouse (1929), were met with scorn by the Soviet state and literary establishment. In 1930 Mayakovsky committed suicide – suicide letter. Even after death his relationship with the Soviet state remained unsteady. Though Mayakovsky had previously been harshly criticized by Stalinist governmental bodies like RAPP, Joseph Stalin posthumously declared Mayakovsky “the best and the most talented poet of our Soviet epoch.” Lilya Yuryevna Brik (alternatively spelled Lili or Lily, Russian: Лиля Юрьевна Брик; November 11 [O.S. October 30] 1891 – August 4, 1978) is known best as a muse of Vladimir Mayakovsky, with whom she was in an open marriage relationship while married to Osip Brik. Pablo Neruda called her “muse of Russian avant-garde”. Her name was frequently abbreviated by her contemporaries as “Л.Ю.” or “Л.Ю.Б.” which are the first letters of the Russian word «любовь» lyubov, “love”. She subsequently divorced Osip and married Soviet General Vitali Primakov; and then Vasily Katanyan, before committing suicide at the age of 87 when she was terminally ill. Costa Concordia: Costa Concordia (Italian pronunciation: [ˈkɔsta konˈkɔrdja]) was a Concordia-class cruise ship built in 2004 by the Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yards in Italy and operated from 2005 until 2012 by Costa Crociere (a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation). It was wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio in Italy on 13 January 2012. The ship was irreparably damaged in the collision and was subsequently declared a total loss and later towed to the port of Genoa where it was scrapped. The name Concordia was intended to express the wish for “continuing harmony, unity, and peace between European nations.”
Sinking of Costa Concordia: The Costa Concordia capsized and sank after striking an underwater rock obstruction off Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, on 13 January 2012, with the loss of 32 lives. The ship, carrying 4,252 people, was on the first leg of a cruise around the Mediterranean Sea, starting from Civitavecchia in Lazio, Italy, when the Captain deviated from her planned route at the Isola del Giglio, to do a ‘sail-past salute‘ to the Island; and struck a rock formation on the sea floor. The impact could be heard by passengers on board, and caused a temporary power blackout when water flooded the engine room. Coincidentally, when the ship first made impact with the rock, it was claimed that Titanic’s theme song “My Heart Will Go On” was playing in a restaurant. The captain, Francesco Schettino, ordered evacuation after an hour of drifting, during which the ship had started to list. Meanwhile, the harbour authorities were alerted by worried passengers, and vessels were sent to the rescue. During a six-hour evacuation, most passengers were brought ashore. The search for missing people continued for several months, with all but two being accounted for. The ship was righted on 17 September 2013, and on 24 October 2013 it was reported that DNA analysis of one body found earlier in the same month confirmed it was the body of missing Italian passenger Maria Grazia Trecarichi. Captain Schettino was arrested on preliminary charges of manslaughter in connection with causing a shipwreck, failing to assist 300 passengers, and failing to be the last to leave the wreck. He was later charged with failing to describe to maritime authorities the scope of the disaster and with abandoning incapacitated passengers. Costa Cruises offered compensation to passengers (to a limit of €11,000 a person) to pay for all damages, including the value of the cruise. One-third of the passengers took this offer. The company also at first offered to pay Captain Schettino’s legal costs, but later changed its position. There were immediate fears of an ecological disaster, because the partially submerged wreck was in danger of slipping into much deeper water, with a risk of oil pollution that could have devastated the popular tourist zone in the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals, one of the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance. In the end, no significant fuel leak occurred, and all the fuel was extracted safely from the ship by 24 March 2012. On 11 February 2015, after a trial of more than eighteen months, Captain Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter of 32 passengers and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Prosecutors had asked for a 26-year sentence, but the court gave Schettino ten years for multiple manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck, one year for abandoning the passengers, and one month for providing false information to port authorities. In 2016, his appeal was rejected and the sentence upheld. A final appeal is currently pending. He would remain free until the end of the process. No charges were brought against the British/American owners of the Italian Costa Cruises’ ship, despite the poor safety culture promulgated by them on board Costa Concordia. Titan Salvage: Raising of Costa Concordia: On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the sunken Costa Concordia ship began. The operation started late that day due to bad weather, and by the early hours of 17 September 2013 the wreck was set upright on its underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated by large caissons (metal tanks) attached to its sides and was towed 320 kilometres (200 miles) to its home port of Genoa. There the ship will be dismantled and materials from the ship will be recycled. Costa Concordia was officially declared a “constructive total loss” by the insurance company, and her salvage was “one of the biggest maritime salvage operations”. TITAN Salvage, a Crowley company, was a worldwide marine salvage and wreck removal company based in Houston, Texas, that performed over 350 salvage and wreck removal projects, including some of the most technically demanding projects ever undertaken. On 21 April 2012, it was announced TITAN, with its partner company, Micoperi, an Italian firm specializing in subsea engineering solutions, had been awarded the contract by Costa Crociere to refloat and tow away the Costa Concordia to the port of Genoa to be scrapped. On 21 April 2015, Crowley and A.P. Moller–Maersk Group announced the merger of their respective salvage divisions, TITAN and Svitzer Salvage, to form a company operating as Ardent. Ardent is based in Houston and its chief executive officer is Mr. Peter Pietka. Crowley Maritime Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Florida, and founded in 1892, is primarily a family and employee-owned marine solutions, energy and logistics services company that provides services in the U.S. and international markets. Giglio Island: Campese Tower & Fausto Pasticceria: Isola del Giglio (English: Giglio Island) is an Italian island and comune situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Tuscany, and is part of the Province of Grosseto. The island is one of seven that form the Tuscan Archipelago, lying within the Arcipelago Toscano National Park. Giglio means “lily” in Italian, and though the name would appear consistent with the insignia of Medici Florence, it derives from Aegilium, “Goat Island”, a Latin transliteration of the Greek word for “little goat”. The Tower of Campese was built as a coastal defense tower by Cosimo I de’ Medici in the late 16th century, it was then transformed into a private house. It is found in Giglio Campese; a village in Tuscany, central Italy, administratively a frazione of the comune of Isola del Giglio, province of Grosseto. At the time of the 2001 census its population amounted to 154. Giglio Campese is located on the north-western coastal side of Giglio Island and it is about 5 km from the municipal seat of Giglio Castello. It is an important seaside resort and one of the three towns on the island – along with Giglio Castello and Giglio Porto. Pasticceria da Fausto: Pasticceria Casalinga since 1974.
Fausto Culture Change: “At first, we were the ‘new kids on the block,’: explained TITAN’s Sandra Goranovic, senior accountant, who was based in Giglio off and on for the duration of the project. “But over time, the culture of the island changed. The people of Giglio accepted it for what it was: there was an accident and we all made the best of it. The shops even stayed open at odd hours and through winter for us. And they served us first so we could get back to work and gave us a credit system to pay for our meals.” … “After a while we knew the restaurants and shop-owners by name and they knew us,” said Crowley’s Ray Anderson, director, finance. “At this one little restaurant in Ravenna, the staff frequently wore TITAN t-shirts. It seemed like everyone was on team TITAN.” “Our whole perspective changed,” Rosalba Brizzi, owner of Bar Fausto in the center of the Giglio port – a favorite spot for the TITAN Salvage crews – also told CNN. “No one ever challenged our way of doing things before. We were set in our ways and then suddenly our little island had to adjust to one of the most diverse populations anywhere in Italy. Can we go back to how we were before? I don’t know how to do that.” – Crowley: Raising the Concordia [PDF]: Giglio Changed Forever pp 31-32
Fausto Disaster Capitalism: “We aren’t the same without the ship, both economically and even as a community,” Rosalba Pellegrini, owner of the Bar Fausto in Giglio’s port, told The Daily Beast. Disaster Capitalism: The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism is a 2007 book by the Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein. In the book, Klein argues that neoliberal free market policies (as advocated by the economist Milton Friedman) have risen to prominence in some developed countries because of a deliberate strategy of “shock therapy”. This centers on the exploitation of national crises to push through controversial policies while citizens are too emotionally and physically distracted by disasters or upheavals to mount an effective resistance. The book suggests that some man-made events, such as the Iraq War, were undertaken with the intention of pushing through such unpopular policies in their wake. Some reviewers criticized the book for making what they described as incorrect claims, while others praised it as a compelling and important work. The Shock Doctrine is the basis of a 2009 documentary by the same name directed by Michael Winterbottom. Disaster Capitalism Documentaries: C-SPAN: Naomi Klein: The Shock Doctrine and Economics. Giglio: Florencian Italian Name for Fleur de Lis Lily: The fleur-de-lis or flower-de-luce is a stylized lily (in French, fleur means “flower”, and lis means “lily”) that is used as a decorative design or symbol. It may be “at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic”, especially in French heraldry. In Italy, the fleur de lis, called giglio is mainly known as the crest of the city of Florence. In the Florentine fleurs-de-lis, the stamens are always posed between the petals. Originally argent (silver or white) on gules (red) background, the emblem became the standard of the imperial party in Florence (parte ghibellina), causing the town government, which maintained a staunch Guelph stance, being strongly opposed to the imperial pretensions on city states, to reverse the color pattern to the final gules lily on argent background. This heraldic charge is often known as the Florentine lily to distinguish it from the conventional (stamen-not-shown) design. As an emblem of the city, it is therefore found in icons of Zenobius, its first bishop, and associated with Florence’s patron Saint John the Baptist in the Florentine fiorino. Several towns subjugated by Florence or founded within the territory of the Florentine Republic adopted a variation of the Florentine lily in their crests, often without the stamens. The heraldic fleur-de-lis is still widespread: among the numerous cities which use it as a symbol are some whose names echo the word ‘lily’, for example, Liljendal, Finland, and Lelystad, Netherlands. This is called canting arms in heraldic terminology. Other European examples of municipal coats-of-arms bearing the fleur-de-lis include Lincoln in England, Morcín in Spain, Wiesbaden in Germany, Skierniewice in Poland and Jurbarkas in Lithuania. The Swiss municipality of Schlieren and the Estonian municipality of Jõelähtme also have a fleur-de-lis on their coats.
Cougar Ace 23 July 2006: The MV Cougar Ace is a Singapore-flagged roll-on/roll-off car carrier vessel. The Cougar Acewas built by Kanasashi Co., of Toyohashi, Japan and launched in June 1993. On May 4, 2005, Cougar Ace delivered 5,214 automobiles at the Fraser River wharves in Richmond, British Columbia. This set a Canadian record for the most vehicles offloaded from a single ship. On July 23, 2006, she was en route from Japan to Vancouver, British Columbia; Tacoma, Washington; and Port Hueneme, California, with a cargo of 4,812 vehicles. During an exchange of ballast water south of the Aleutian Islands, she lost stability and developed a 60-degree list to port. There were reports of a large wave striking the vessel during the ballast transfer, but it is unknown what effect this had on her loss of stability. On July 24, the United States Coast Guard and the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard successfully rescued the 23 crew members.
Titan Salvage of Cougar Ace: A Cougar Ace marine salvage team from Titan Salvage arrived on site on July 30, 2006. Led by Salvage Master Captain Rich Habib, the team was able to get aboard the vessel via a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from the cutter Morgenthau. Later that day naval architect Marty Johnson slipped and fell to his death as the salvage team was preparing to leave the Cougar Ace and board the tugboat Emma Foss. Johnson was a 40-year-old resident of Issaquah, Washington and employee of Crowley, the parent company of Titan Salvage. Titan Salvage subsequently towed the vessel through Samalga Pass to the north side of the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea; for protection from the weather using the tugboats Sea Victory, Gladiator and Emma Foss. It was then taken to Old Woman’s Bay, Unalaska Island, where it was moored to Icicle Seafoods mooring buoy. It was righted and redelivered to Mitsui on August 16, 2006. On August 25, 2006 the newly upright vessel was put under tow to Portland, Oregon for inspection and repair. Mazda Scrapping off Cougar Ace Cargo to save Mazda’s Reputation: 4,703 of the vehicles on board the Cougar Ace were Mazdas; 60% were 2007 Mazda3s and 30% were Mazda CX-7 crossover SUVs. The remaining Mazdas were mainly RX-8s and MX-5s. Mazda officials reported minimal damage to the vehicles on board despite the ship listing for over a month. However, according to the US Coast Guard, 41 vehicles broke loose and shifted, and the few public pictures from inside the ship do show severe damage to at least some cars. On September 11, 2006, one day before the Cougar Ace arrived in Portland to begin unloading, Mazda USA announced that none of the Mazda cars aboard would be sold as new vehicles. Mazda USA published a list of VINs for the affected Mazda vehicles on the Mazda website. On December 15, 2006, Mazda announced that all vehicles on the Cougar Ace would be scrapped. After an extensive process to deploy all the airbags in each vehicle, all of the Mazda cars were crushed onsite at the Port of Portland by Pacific Car Crushing. The last Mazda car from the shipment was crushed on May 6, 2008. Sinking of Kursk 12 August 2000: The Kursk submarine disaster that caused the sinking of the Oscar-class submarine (Russian: Project 949A Антей) Kursk took place during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than 10 years, in the Barents Sea on Saturday, 12 August 2000, killing all 118 personnel on board. Nearby ships registered the initial explosion and a second, much larger, explosion two minutes and 15 seconds later, which was powerful enough to register on seismographs as far away as Alaska. The Russian Navy did not recognize that the sub had sunk and did not halt the exercise or initiate a search for the sub for more than six hours. Because the emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled, it took more than 16 hours for them to locate the sunken ship. There are numerous theories as to the cause of the explosion and sinking. A Dutch company was contracted by the Russians to raise the hull. Employing newly developed lifting technologies, they recovered all but the bow of the vessel, including the remains of 115 sailors, who were buried in Russia. More than two years after the sinking, the Russian government completed a 133-volume, top-secret investigation of the disaster. The government released a four-page summary to the public that was published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta. It revealed “stunning breaches of discipline, shoddy, obsolete and poorly maintained equipment,” and “negligence, incompetence, and mismanagement.” The report said the rescue operation was unjustifiably delayed. Kudu: KuduAntelope: Kudus are two species of antelope of the genus Tragelaphus: Lesser kudu, Tragelaphus imberbis, of eastern Africa; Greater kudu, Tragelaphus strepsiceros, of eastern and southern Africa. The name of the animal was imported into English in the 18th century from isiXhosa iqhude, via Afrikaans koedoe. A kudu horn is a musical instrument made from the horn of the kudu. A form of it is sometimes used as a shofar in Jewish ceremonies. It is mostly seen in the Western world in its use as a part of the Scouting movement’s Wood Badge training program which, when blown, signals the start of a Wood Badge training course or activity. A horn of this shape, when used by soccer fans, is called kuduzela (a portmanteau of “kudu” and “vuvuzela”). The kudu, “tholo” in the languages of Setswana and Venda, is a tribal totem of the Barolong and Batlhaping people of Botswana and South Africa. In the sport of kudu dung spitting, contestants spit pellets of kudu dung, with the farthest distance reached being the winner. The sport is mostly popular among the Afrikaner community in South Africa, and a world championship is held each year. Kudu Saudi Restaurant: Kudu is a large fast food chain in Saudi Arabia. Kudu was established in 1988 and has over 290 branches in Saudi Arabia. It is also available in Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, and Libya. The first branch opened in Riyadh on 16 April 1988 on 30th street. Kudu serves burgers, which are popular with Saudis, but its specialty is sandwiches. CEC: Cation Exchange Capacity: CEC is the total amount of cations that a soil can retain. The higher the CEC, the greater the ability it has to store plant nutrients. Soil CEC increases as clay and/or organic matter, and/or pH increases. In soil science, cation-exchange capacity or CEC is the number of exchangeable cations per dry weight that a soil is capable of holding, at a given pH value, and available for exchange with the soil water solution. CEC is used as a measure of soil fertility, nutrient retention capacity, and the capacity to protect groundwater from cation contamination. It is expressed as milliequivalent of hydrogen per 100 g of dry soil (meq+/100g), or the SI unit centi-mol per kg (cmol+/kg). The numeric values are the same in any system of units. Clay and humus have electrostatic surface charges that attract and hold ions. The holding capacity of clay varies with the type of clay. Humus has a CEC that is two to three times that of the best clay. One way to increase the CEC of a soil is to enhance the formation of humus. In general, the higher the CEC, the higher the fertility of that soil. SoilMinerals: Cation Exchange Capacity Simplified.

Sinking of MV SEWOL: MV Sewol was a Korean vehicle-passenger ferry, built and previously operated in Japan. It was operated between Incheon to Jeju. The sinking of MV Sewol occurred on the morning of 16 April 2014, en route from Incheon to Jeju in South Korea. The ferry capsized after making a sharp turn, while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School in Ansan City. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) north off Byeongpungdo at 08:58 Korea Standard Time. In all, 304 passengers and crew members died in the disaster. Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes after the South Korean coast guard. The sinking of Sewol resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many criticized the actions of the captain and most of the crew of the ferry. On 15 May 2014, the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, while the other 11 members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship. An arrest warrant was also issued for Yoo Byung-eun, the owner of Chonghaejin Marine, which operated Sewol, but he could not be found despite a nationwide manhunt. On 22 July 2014, police revealed that they had established that a dead man found in a field 415 kilometres south of Seoul was Yoo. Foul play was ruled out, but police say they have yet to establish the cause of Yoo’s death. On the first anniversary of the disaster, as part of commemorations for the victims of the sinking of Sewol, 4,475 people held electronic candles to form the shape of the ferry in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for largest torchlight image. The South Korea government’s Board of Audit and Inspection revealed that the Korean Register’s licensing was based on falsified documents. After the incident, the company reported that the ship was carrying 124 cars, 56 trucks, and 1157 tons of cargo. The amount of cargo carried was twice the legal limit. 147 Energy Slaves: Alternergy Mag: How many Energy Slaves do we employ?: Last year, the 296 million people in the USA used 97 quadrillion BTUs of energy (the BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is a measure of energy equivalent to a kitchen match which allows us to compare different energy sources). To put that huge number into perspective, each of us used about 328 million BTUs during the year, the equivalent of 96,000 Kilowatt hours of electricity. A Kilowatt-hour is about 1/3 more work than a horsepower-hour, so we used about 128,640 horsepower-hours, or the equivalent of 147 energy slaves working for each of us 24/7, all year long. Now think about your energy slaves as you go about your day. Every time you leave a 75 Watt light bulb burning, one of these very strong energy slaves is pedaling away as hard as he can to keep it going for you. If that 25 mpg car has a 100 horsepower motor, it’s the equivalent of 1000 strong people. If you add up all the power we Americans use, on average, to light and heat our homes, transport us, etc. and convert it to the human energy equivalent, it’s an unimaginable opulence by the standards of all the humans who came before us. It is as if our well-being were measured by the number of energy slaves we have learned to command. What powers our energy slaves? Nuclear provides 8%. Hydro, the image of electricity in the northwest, provides only 3% of total US energy, and other renewables like solar, wind, wood waste and biomass only about 4% combined. By far the most comes from the fossil fuel trio of petroleum (39%), natural gas (23%) and coal (23%). Fossil fuels won’t last forever. Oil, in particular, will be depleted within decades – i.e., within the lifetimes of our children – and will be subject to shortages much sooner than that. Little Boy with Ration Coupon: An eager school boy gets his first experience in using War Ration Book Two. With many parents engaged in war work, children were taught the facts of point rationing for helping out in family shopping. Wikimedia. US History: World War II Rationing: With the onset of World War II, numerous challenges confronted the American people. The government found it necessary to ration food, gas, and even clothing during that time. Americans were asked to conserve on everything. With not a single person unaffected by the war, rationing meant sacrifices for all. In the spring of 1942, the Food Rationing Program was set into motion. Rationing would deeply affect the American way of life for most. The federal government needed to control supply and demand. Rationing was introduced to avoid public anger with shortages and not to allow only the wealthy to purchase commodities. While industry and commerce were affected, individuals felt the effects more intensely. People were often required to give up many material goods, but there also was an increase in employment. The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil: The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil is a Community Solution documentary film that explores the Special Period in Peacetime and its aftermath; the economic collapse and eventual recovery of Cuba following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Following the dramatic steps taken by both the Cuban government and citizens, its major themes include urban agriculture, energy dependence, and sustainability. Community Solution. Power of Community: When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call “The Special Period.” The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope. Trailer.
Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers Tank: Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers is a 2006 documentary film made by Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films. Produced while the Iraq War was in full swing, the film deals with the alleged war profiteering and negligence of private contractors and consultants who went to Iraq as part of the US war effort. Specifically, the film claims four major contractors – Blackwater, K.B.R.-Halliburton, CACI and Titan – were over-billing the U.S. government and doing substandard work while endangering the lives of American soldiers, Iraqi civilians, and their own employees. These corporations were tasked with “virtually everything except the actual killing,” including food, laundry, housing, security, intelligence gathering and interrogation. Trailer. The story unfolds after a staff sergeant is killed by an insurgent trap and an apparently calm veteran is brought in to head the squad. His comrades suspect that their new team leader is being driven to take terrifying risks. Writer Mark Boal drew on his experience during embedded access to provide an authentic background for the production, although certain army procedures were portrayed with artistic licence. Trailer. Reinhard Heydrich Assassination plot Flat Tyre:Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich (7 March 1904 – 4 June 1942) was a high-ranking German Nazi official during World War II, and one of the main architects of the Holocaust. He was SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Polizei (Senior Group Leader and Chief of Police) as well as chief of the Reich Main Security Office (including the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD). He was also Stellvertretender Reichsprotektor (Deputy/Acting Reich-Protector) of Bohemia and Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic. Heydrich served as president of the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC; later known as Interpol) and chaired the January 1942 Wannsee Conference, which formalised plans for theFinal Solution to the Jewish question—the deportation and genocide of all Jews in German-occupied Europe. Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, headed by headed by Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík; and carried out in Prague on 27 May 1942 after having been prepared by the British Special Operations Executive with the approval of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Wounded in the attack, Heydrich died of his injuries on 4 June 1942. His death led to a wave of merciless reprisals by German SS troops, including the destruction of villages and the killing of civilians. On 27 May 1942 at 10:30, Heydrich proceeded on his daily commute from his home in Panenské Břežany to Prague Castle. Gabčík and Kubiš waited at the tram stop at a tight curve near Bulovka Hospital in Prague 8-Libeň. The spot was chosen because the curve would force the car to slow down. Josef Valčík (from group Silver A) was positioned about 100 metres (109 yards) north of Gabčík and Kubiš as lookout for the approaching car. Heydrich’s green, open-topped Mercedes 320 Convertible B reached the curve two minutes later. Gabčík stepped in front of the vehicle and tried to open fire with his Sten submachine gun, but it jammed. Heydrich ordered his driver, SS-Oberscharführer Klein, to stop the car, then stood up to shoot Gabčík with his Luger pistol. Kubiš threw a modified anti-tank grenade (concealed in a briefcase) at the vehicle and its fragments ripped through the car’s right rear bumper, embedding shrapnel and fibres from the upholstery in Heydrich’s body upon detonation, even though the grenade failed to enter the car. The grenade also injured Kubiš. Following the explosion, Gabčík and Kubiš fired at Heydrich with their Colt M1903 pistols but failed to hit him, as they were shocked by the explosion as well. Heydrich staggered out of the car, apparently unaware of his shrapnel injuries, returned fire, and tried to chase Gabčík, but he soon collapsed. Klein returned from his abortive attempt to chase Kubiš, who fled the scene by bicycle. Now bleeding profusely, Heydrich ordered Klein to chase Gabčík on foot, saying “Get that bastard!”. Klein chased him into a butcher shop, where Gabčík shot him twice with his pistol, severely wounding him in the leg, and then escaped to a local safe house via tram. Gabčík and Kubiš were initially convinced the attack had failed. Intelligence falsely linked the assassins to the village of Lidice. A Gestapo report identified Lidice as the assailants’ suspected hiding place, since several Czech army officers exiled in England at the time were known to have come from there. The village of Lidice was destroyed on 9 June 1942; 199 men were executed, 195 women were immediately deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp, and 95 children taken prisoner. Of the children, 81 were later killed in gas vans at the Chełmno extermination camp, while eight others were taken for adoption by German families. Another Czech village, Ležáky, was also destroyed because a radio transmitter belonging to the Silver A team was found there. All adults were murdered in the village of Ležáky, men and women alike. Both towns were burned, and the ruins of Lidice leveled. The assailants took refuge in Karel Boromejsky Church, an Eastern Orthodox church dedicated to Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Prague. The Germans were unable to locate the attackers until Karel Čurda of the “Out Distance” sabotage group was arrested and questioned by the Gestapo and gave them the names of the team’s local contacts for the bounty of one million Reichsmarks. Waffen-SS troops laid siege to the church on 18 June 1942, but they were unable to take the paratroopers alive, despite the best efforts of 750 SS soldiers under the command of SS-Gruppenführer Karl Fischer von Treuenfeld. Kubiš, Adolf Opálka, and Jaroslav Svarc were killed in the prayer loft after a two-hour gun battle. Kubiš was said to have survived the battle, but he died shortly afterward from his injuries. Gabčík, Josef Valcik, Josef Bublik, and Jan Hruby committed suicide in the crypt after repeated SS attacks, attempts to smoke them out with tear gas, and Prague fire brigade trucks brought in to try to flood the crypt. Bishop Gorazd took the blame for the actions in the church, in an attempt to minimize the reprisals among his flock, and even wrote letters to the Nazi authorities, who arrested him on 27 June 1942 and tortured him. On 4 September 1942, the bishop, the church’s priests, and senior lay leaders were taken to Kobylisy Shooting Range in a northern suburb of Prague and shot by Nazi firing squads. For his actions, Bishop Gorazd was later glorified as a martyr by the Eastern Orthodox Church. Napoleon Bonaparte Impossible: Napoléon Bonaparte, (born Napoleone di Buonaparte; 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814, and again in 1815. Napoleon dominated European and global affairs for more than a decade while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars. He won most of these wars and the vast majority of his battles, building a large empire that ruled over continental Europe before its final collapse in 1815. One of the greatest commanders in history, his wars and campaigns are studied at military schools worldwide. He also remains one of the most celebrated and controversial political figures in human history. His legal achievement, the Napoleonic Code, has influenced the legal systems of more than 70 nations around the world. British historian Andrew Roberts stated, “The ideas that underpin our modern world—meritocracy, equality before the law, property rights, religious toleration, modern secular education, sound finances, and so on—were championed, consolidated, codified and geographically extended by Napoleon. To them he added a rational and efficient local administration, an end to rural banditry, the encouragement of science and the arts, the abolition of feudalism and the greatest codification of laws since the fall of the Roman Empire.” In 1813, Prussia and Austria joined Russian forces in a Sixth Coalition against France. A military campaign culminated in a large Allied army defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813. The Allies then invaded France and captured Paris in the spring of 1814, forcing Napoleon to abdicate in April. He was exiled to the island of Elba, northwest of Giglio; near Rome and the Bourbons were restored to power. However, Napoleon escaped from Elba in February 1815 and took control of France once again. The Allies responded by forming a Seventh Coalition, which defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. The British exiled him to the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, where he spent the remainder of his years. His death in 1821 at the age of 51 was received with surprise, shock and grief throughout Europe and left a memory that still persists. Quote: The word impossible is not in my dictionary. Wannsee Conspiracy Enemies of the State Meathooks: The Wannsee Conference (German: Wannseekonferenz) was a meeting of senior officials of Nazi Germany, held in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee on 20 January 1942 during World War II. The purpose of the conference was to ensure the cooperation of administrative leaders of various departments in the implementation of the final solution to the Jewish question. The conference, called by Chief of the Reich Main Security Office (RSHA) Reinhard Heydrich, was attended by representatives from several government ministries, including state secretaries from the Foreign Office, the justice, interior, and state ministries, and representatives from the Schutzstaffel (SS). In the course of the meeting, Heydrich outlined the proposal of final extermination of European Jews in German-occupied Europe under the pretext of resettlement. The plan called for removing them from their home environment and deporting them by train to extermination camps in the General Government territory of occupied Poland, where they would be murdered out of sight primarily by gassing. Soon after the invasion of Poland in September 1939, the persecution of European Jewry was raised to unprecedented levels, but indiscriminate killing of men, women and children began in June 1941 after the onset of Operation Barbarossa against the Soviets. On 31 July 1941 Hermann Göring gave written authorization to Heydrich to prepare and submit a plan for a “total solution of the Jewish question” in territories under German control and to coordinate the participation of all involved government organisations. At Wannsee, Heydrich emphasized that once the mass deportation was complete, the SS would take complete charge of the exterminations. A secondary goal was to arrive at a definition of who was formally Jewish and thus determine the scope of the genocide. One copy of the Protocol with circulated minutes of the meeting survived the war. It was found by the Allies in March 1947 among files that had been seized from the German Foreign Office. It was used as evidence in the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials. The Wannsee House, site of the conference, is now a Holocaust memorial. Meathooks: “We will accomplish this. I will not allow administrative technicalities to slow it down. Every agency will jump to follow my order, or arses will sting. And there are no shortage of meathooks on which to hang enemies of the state. This will be an SS operation. And as the war goes on, the SS will more and more command the agenda and put marks against the names of the less than cooperative. You have a choice to make. .. All I want from this meeting is unanimity; and getting what has to be done, done. And with you at my side, so much is possible.” – Reinhard Heydrich; Conspiracy.
