Heinberg: Urinetown Population Resources & Human Idealism:
To advocate for human rights, peace & social justice while ignoring their necessary ecological basis is intellectual fraud. – Richard Heinberg; Population, Resources & Human Idealism.
Al Bartlett, retired professor of physics at the University of Colorado, developed a lecture in the early 1970s that he has since delivered over 2000 times. Titled Arithmetic, Population, and Energy, the talk takes his audience along on an exploration of the meaning of steady growth (so many percent per year)—which is of course the sacred basis of all modern economies. As Bartlett makes clear, no steady rate of growth in population or resource consumption is sustainable.
During the course of the lecture, he asks, “Well, what can we do about this? What makes the population problem worse, and what reduces it?” On the screen he projects a slide with two columns of words. On the left-hand column are the principal factors leading to population growth; on the right, factors leading to a decrease of population.
Table of Options
Increase populations Decrease Populations
Large Families Small families
Immigration Stopping Immigration
Medicine Public Health
Law and Order Murder/Violence
Scientific Agriculture Famine
Accident Prevention Accidents
Clean Air Pollution (Smoking)
Ignorance of the Problem
Bartlett notes that population growth will cease at some point: the mathematics assures us of that (otherwise, in just a few centuries, the entire surface of the planet would be covered with humans). Moreover, we need not do anything to solve the population problem: nature will take care of that for us. Sooner or later, from the right-hand column nature will choose some method or methods of limiting human numbers. But the options chosen may not be to our liking. The only way we can avoid having to live with (or die by) nature’s choices is to proactively choose for ourselves which options from the right-hand column we would prefer voluntarily to implement. Hesitating in our choice, or failing to implement it, leads us directly back to nature’s options.

Clayton County Food Stamps Welfare Checks Cancellation Riot
Thousands of Georgians are likely to lose their food stamps next week, the latest deadline for able-bodied recipients to find a job.
In January, the state expanded the work requirements for able-bodied, childless food stamp recipients to 21 counties, including several in the Atlanta area such as Coweta, Bartow and Barrow. Some 12,000 able-bodied people in these counties were told they have three months to start a job or job training, or face losing their benefits. April 1 is the deadline.
When these work requirements have been implemented in other states, more than half the affected people often lose their benefits.
The work requirements are wildly popular among conservatives who believe these people need to be pushed into finding work. But progressives say its a harsh policy that doesn’t take into account the challenges many of these people face, such as physical and mental health issues.

1984: Room 101
Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate and its residents are dictated to by a political regime euphemistically named English Socialism, shortened to “Ingsoc” in Newspeak, the government’s invented language. The superstate is under the control of the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and government that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as “thoughtcrime”, which is enforced by the “Thought Police”.
The tyranny is ostensibly overseen by Big Brother, the Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality, but who may not even exist. The Party “seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power.” The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue in Newspeak), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. The instructions that the workers receive portray the corrections as fixing misquotations and never as what they really are: forgeries and falsifications. A large part of the Ministry also actively destroys all documents that have not been edited and do not contain the revisions; in this way, no proof exists that the government is lying. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. The heroine of the novel, Julia, is based on Orwell’s second wife, Sonia Orwell.
The Ministry of Love (or Miniluv in Newspeak) serves as Oceania’s interior ministry. It enforces loyalty to Big Brother through fear, buttressed through a massive apparatus of security and repression, as well as systematic brainwashing. The Ministry of Love building has no windows and is surrounded by barbed wire entanglements, steel doors, hidden machine-gun nests, and guards armed with “jointed truncheons”. Referred to as “the place where there is no darkness”, its interior lights are never turned off. It is arguably the most powerful ministry, controlling the will of the population. The Thought Police are a part of Miniluv.
The Ministry of Love, like the other ministries, is misnamed, since it is largely responsible for the practice and infliction of misery, fear, suffering and torture. In a sense, however, the name is apt, since its ultimate purpose is to instill love of Big Brother—the only form of love permitted in Oceania—in the minds of thoughtcriminals as part of the process of reverting them to orthodox thought. This is typical of the language of Newspeak, in which words and names frequently contain both an idea and its opposite; the orthodox party member is nonetheless able to resolve these contradictions through the disciplined use of doublethink.
Room 101, introduced in the climax of the novel, is the basement torture chamber in the Ministry of Love, in which the Party attempts to subject a prisoner to his or her own worst nightmare, fear or phobia, with the object of breaking down their resistance.
You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.
— O’Brien, Part III, Chapter V
Such is the purported omniscience of the state in the society of Nineteen Eighty-Four that even a citizen’s nightmares are known to the Party. The nightmare, and therefore the threatened punishment, of the protagonist Winston Smith is to be attacked by rats. This is manifested in Room 101 by confronting Smith with a wire cage that contains two large rats. The front of the cage is shaped so that it can fit over a person’s face. A trap-door is then opened, allowing the rats to devour the victim’s face. This cage is fitted over Smith’s face, but he saves himself by begging the authorities to let his lover, Julia, suffer this torture instead of him. The threatened torture, and what Winston does to escape it, breaks his last promise to himself and to Julia: never to betray her. The book suggests that Julia is likewise subjected to her own worst fear (although it is not revealed what that fear is), and when she and Winston later meet in a park, he notices a scar on her forehead. The intent of threatening Winston with the rats was to force him into betraying the only person he loved and therefore to break his spirit.
Orwell named Room 101 after a conference room at Broadcasting House where he used to sit through tedious meetings. When the original room 101 at the BBC was due to be demolished, a plaster cast of it was made by artist Rachel Whiteread and displayed in the cast courts of the Victoria and Albert Museum from November 2003 until June 2004.

Israel Defense Forces 101
Commando Unit 101 (Hebrew: יחידה 101) was a special forces unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), founded and commanded by Ariel Sharon on orders from Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in August 1953. They were armed with non-standard weapons and tasked with carrying out retribution operations across the state’s borders—in particular, establishing small unit maneuvers, activation and insertion tactics. Members of the unit were recruited only from agricultural kibbutzim and moshavim. Membership in the unit was by invitation only, and any new member had to be voted on by all existing members before they were accepted. The unit was merged into the 890th Paratroop Battalion during January 1954, on orders of General Dayan, Chief of Staff, because he wanted their experience and spirit to be spread among all infantry units of IDF starting with the paratroopers. They are considered to have had a significant influence on the development of subsequent Israeli infantry-oriented units.
Egyptian-Israeli Agreement on Disengagment of Forces in Pursuance of the Geneva Peace Conference Signed at Kilometer 101
The Yom Kippur War, Ramadan War, or October War Hebrew: מלחמת יום הכיפורים Milẖemet Yom HaKipurim or מלחמת יום כיפור Milẖemet Yom Kipur); (Arabic: حرب أكتوبر Ḥarb ʾUktōbar, or حرب تشرين Ḥarb Tišrīn, also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, was a war fought by a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel from October 6 to 25, 1973. The fighting mostly took place in the Sinai and the Golan Heights, territories that had been occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat wanted also to reopen the Suez Canal. Neither specifically planned to destroy Israel, although the Israeli leaders could not be sure of that.
…. Disengagement talks took place on October 28, 1973, at “Kilometre 101” between Israeli Major General Aharon Yariv and Egyptian Major General Abdel Ghani el-Gamasy. Ultimately, Kissinger took the proposal to Sadat, who agreed. United Nations checkpoints were brought in to replace Israeli ones, nonmilitary supplies were allowed to pass, and prisoners-of-war were to be exchanged. A summit conference in Geneva followed in December 1973. All parties to the war – Israel, Syria, Jordan and Egypt – were invited to a joint effort by the Soviet Union and the United States to finally usher peace between the Arabs and Israelis. This conference was recognized by UN Security Council Resolution 344 and was based on the Resolution 338, calling for a “just and durable peace”. Nevertheless, the conference was forced to adjourn on January 9, 1974, as Syria refused attendance. After the failed conference Henry Kissinger started conducting shuttle diplomacy, meeting with Israel and the Arab states directly. The first concrete result of this was the initial military disengagement agreement, signed by Israel and Egypt on January 18, 1974. The agreement commonly known as Sinai I had the official name of Sinai Separation of Forces Agreement. Under its terms, Israel agreed to pull back its forces from the areas West of Suez Canal, which it had occupied since the end of hostilities..

Ted Kaczynski Unabomber Manifesto 101:
Theodore John Kaczynski (born May 22, 1942), also known as the “Unabomber”, is an American anarchist, serial killer, and domestic terrorist. A mathematical prodigy, he abandoned a promising academic career in 1969, then between 1978 and 1995 killed three people, and injured 23 others, in a nationwide bombing campaign targeting people involved with modern technology. In conjunction with this campaign he issued a wide-ranging social critique opposing industrialization and modern technology, and advancing a nature-centered form of anarchism.
In 1995, Kaczynski mailed several letters, including some to his victims and others to major media outlets, outlining his goals and demanding that his 50-plus page, 35,000-word essay Industrial Society and Its Future, referred to as “Unabomber Manifesto” by the FBI, be printed verbatim by a major newspaper or journal by 01 Oct 1995. He stated that if this demand were met, he would then end his bombing campaign.

Chris Harper Mercer: 01 October 2015
The Umpqua Community College shooting occurred on October 1, 2015, at the UCC campus near Roseburg, Oregon, United States. Chris Harper-Mercer, a 26-year-old enrolled at the school, fatally shot an assistant professor and eight students in a classroom. Seven to nine others were injured. Roseburg police detectives responding to the incident engaged Harper-Mercer in a brief shootout. After being wounded, he killed himself by shooting himself in the head. The mass shooting was the deadliest in Oregon’s modern history.
Christopher Sean “Chris” Harper-Mercer (July 26, 1989 – October 1, 2015) was enrolled in the introductory composition class where he shot his victims. He was born in Los Angeles County, California to Ian Mercer and Laurel Margaret Harper, and lived with his mother during the separation and divorce of his parents, who agreed to shared legal custody.
On the day of the shooting, Harper-Mercer gave a survivor numerous writings showing he had studied mass killings, including the 2014 killing spree at Isla Vista, California. These expressed his sexual frustration as a virgin, animosity toward black men, and a lack of fulfillment in his isolated life. In them, he said “Other people think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m the sane one,” and that he would be “welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil.”

Crisis of Capitalism: Social Order from Breeding & Consumption Regulations?
At the time that Perestroika is being formulated in the early and mid 1980’s when Gorbachev comes to power; the west is not looking nearly as impressive at it had in the late 70’s. For example Reagan and Thatcher are two politicians who highlight the downsides of Western Capitalism; given the unemployment and income inequality that they seem to represent. | In the 1970’s there was a general downturn in then economies of the capitalist world in general. | If you look at the research institutes and the reports of the individuals advising the Soviet Government at the time there were regular reports on discussions in the West of the Crisis of Capitalism and the End of Economic Growth. All they had to do was translate Western reports at the time and it seemed to confirm so much of what Soviet officials had long believed about the end of Capitalism in the West.

“It been years since he started writing about the world. But you know what? If you are looking for an explanation for the Global Economic Crisis. He’s a surprisingly good place to start. With everything going so wrong; you have to wonder; is Karl Marx turning out to be right? Most people know Marx as the father of communism. You might be surprised to hear that most of what he wrote about was about capitalism. And today his ideas about that are being taken seriously; right at the heart of global business. His Analysis was pretty much on the button and explains alot about some of the things we see going on around our economy today. … This bucket is what Marx would have called the industrial reserve army of the unemployed … So, you can see why Marx thought the capitalists were in trouble, no matter what they do. They never want to pay the workers more money. They always need to make more profit. But in seeking out profit, they end up eroding the basis on which its made. They’ve forgotten, if you like, where money ultimately comes from. The punch line, as ever with Marx; is that capitalism is doomed. … what the bourgeoisie produces afterall is its own gravediggers… a recipe for constant crisis …. Its fall, and the victory of the proletariat are equally inevitable.” – Stefanie Flanders; Masters of Money: Karl Marx.

Animals that Practice Orderly Family Planning
Robert Ardrey: The Social Contract: A Personal Inquiry Into the Evolutionary Sources of Order and Disorder:
As detailed in The Social Contract: A Personal Inquiry into the Evolutionary Sources of Order and Disorder, by Robert Ardrey: A significant number of animals are capable of ecologically literate procreation; i.e. animal-cultural-consciously or genetic-unconsciously choosing to practice family planning: control or restrict their breeding with regard to abundance or scarcity of their resource environment; such as Norway rats, red grouse; Australian magpie; Uganda kob antelope; wildebeest, waterbuck, Grant’s & Thomson’s gazelle; southern springbok, hartebeest, topi, puku, oribi, dik-dick, steenbok, lion, kittiwake; etc.
Yet throughout all the natural sciences the definition of a domesticated animal is one that is the product of controlled breeding, which man — aside from a few temporary and unsuccessful efforts in the periods of slavery – is not.
In terms of the social contract, we may say that just as society must furnish the young with freedom to develop their genetic potential, so the breeding adult must not provide society with more young than the group can handle. The propositions are poised in equity, and the neglect of one must result in the nullification of the other. Fifty-one guppies, controlling their numbers through a blend of cannibalism and infanticide which we must assume seems quite normal to guppies, can scarcely be regarded as furnishing a sufficient case for the toppling of a Malthus, the indictment of a Pope, or the elaboration of a social contract. But other evidence exists.
..[..].. In the following section of this chapter I shall explore the self-regulating devices which in many species prevent a buildup to such numbers that only a population crash can provide natural limitation. The species we have been considering — in a sense, the freaks — lack such mechanisms and so are subjected to cyclical control. And while there must remain a temptation to equate man with the lemming and the snowshoe hare, we had best defer our consideration of men until we know more about animals. And we had best defer too those questions facing the new devotees of population dynamics in the 1950’s: How, when density reaches a certain point, does a form of birth control take place so that fewer young are born, or are even conceived? And why — a more difficult question — do the elders drop dead?
..[..].. Norway rats form stable societies when nomore than a dozen adults share a territory and jointly defend it. Within this little world adults form a hierarchy led by an alpha male. The amity-enmity complex which I described in The Territorial Imperative turns hostility outward and preserves peace within the group. Calhoun wrote that the territories, and the buffer zones between, “seemed essential to the maintenance of group integrity.” But they likewise divided up the available space into.homesteads for groups of limited number. So population control was achieved.
Up to ten adults defend as a team a property of five to twenty acres. And these are the only birds that successfully breed. Carrick’s study area was about five square miles of savanna, broken here and there by eucalyptus clumps, supporting thousands of magpies. Both food supply and nesting sites were unlimited. A few non-territorial groups nested in trees, but never succeeded in raising young. The crow-like flocks in the fields never tried. Successful breeding was confined to that 20 percent of the total population within the territorial bands. What, precisely, prevented normal reproduction in any but the propertied bands? Carrick made a surprising discovery. While all males in the total population produced motile sperm, only the hens in the territorial groups ovulated normally.
..[..].. This was the Uganda kob, a species in which males occupy an arena of territorial competition to which females are attracted for copulation. Females will accept no other than the successful, and the masses of surplus males amuse themselves in their bachelor herds. In the few short years since I published my review, territorial systems of breeding have been described in the wildebeest and waterbuck, in the Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle and the comparable southern springbok, in the harte-beest and topi and puku, and in the smallest of them all, the oribi and dik-dik and steenbok. Systems vary, from the modified arena competition of the wildebeest and puku, to the bird-like family territories of the steenbok. But, in all, the main propositions hold true: The female will be attracted only by a territorial male; the male who has failed in the territorial competition will retire into the careless existence of males in groups.
..[..].. The lion, preyed on by none, not too susceptible to disease or parasites, could in a few generations be a victim of overpopulation. The lioness produces her several cubs in a short period of gestation, and, should she lose them, comes into heat again at once. Yet in the Serengeti a stable population of about a thousand lions varies little in number from season to season. The area’s immense numbers of prey animals, such as wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, and zebra, could support far more lions. What keeps their numbers down? A subtle combination of behavior patterns, foremost among them maternal neglect, provides that only so many lions will reach a breeding age and situation.
..[..].. The first control is territorial. As with the Australian magpie, only those females who are part of a permanently resident pride breed successfully. The second control is a dominance order like those of few other species. The young eat last ..[..].. Infant mortality in the lion runs to about 50 percent. And we may contrast that with the quite opposite behavior of the adult hunting dog, which I earlier described, who will touch no food till the young are finished. One may deplore the lion, praise the hunting dog, but either judgment would be anthropomorphic. The behavioral contrasts are expressions of population control. The hardy lion, once he reaches maturity, will be around for a long time. Control must fall on the young. But the delicate hunting dog, so susceptible to disease, must do all in his power to keep adult social numbers replenished.
..[..].. The controversy that has arisen around Wynne-Edwards’ work expresses far more than the reaction of the unsophisticated to a highly sophisticated hypothesis. The opposition is to his concept of group selection, and it has enlisted as fastidious a scientist as David Lack. The fundamental problem facing any theorist attempting to relate clutch size or territorial competition or social rank to population control is how to explain the willingness of the individual to accept certain rules and regulations that exist not in his interest, but in the interest of the whole population. The nesting habits of seabirds provide a clear illustration. A final limitation on the numbers of the kittiwake is offered not by food supply but by a scarcity of cliff-hanging nesting sites which the species favors as a defense against predators. The kittiwake pair can easily raise three young to maturity, yet three quarters of all nests in a colony will show an egg clutch of two. The population is thereby kept within reasonable bounds. But if you are a kittiwake and you have a nest, then why not three? What process of natural selection has induced this self-imposed birth control?
Early in his career, when Wynne-Edwards was working as a biologist in Canada, he took a superb photograph of a large gannet colony on a Newfoundland headland. The photograph, published in Scientific American, required the shortest of cap tions to tell its enigmatic story. One bump of the headland is white with breeding gannets on their nests. An adjacent headland is just as white with “unemployed” birds, those excluded from breeding because they have no nesting territories. But nests can be built anywhere. Why are only a limited number of sites acceptable as breeding stations? We may of course immediately skip to the consequence, that the arbitrary limit placed on nesting sites arbitrarily limits the population. But why do the unemployed birds, having competed and lost in their efforts to gain territories, accept the rules and regulations? They resemble nothing so much as human children in some game who have been declared “out” by the umpire and have been relegated to the sidelines. And we may ask, also, what processes of natural selection could evolve and enforce such a natural treaty between a population and its members?
..[..].. The controversy will be resolved one day by the specialists involved. If Wilson was right at Washington, and competition occurs only when overcrowded numbers struggle for a scarce resource, then Malthus is confirmed. And humanity has little to look forward to but that chaotic day when in unlimited number we assassinate one another in our pursuit of inadequate resources. But if Wynne-Edwards is right, any population, human or non-human, has within its power the limitation of numbers through conventional rules and regulations and the capacity to abide by them.

Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud is a book published in 2000 by physics professor Robert L. Park, critical of research that falls short of adhering to the scientific method. The book is critical of, among other things, homeopathy, cold fusion and the International Space Station.
Betrayers of the Truth
Betrayers of the Truth: Fraud and Deceit in the Halls of Science is a book by William Broad and Nicholas Wade, published in 1982 by Simon & Schuster in New York, and subsequently (1983) also by Century Publishing in London, and with a simplified subtitle as Betrayers of the Truth: Fraud and Deceit in Science by Oxford University Press in 1985. The book is a critique of some widely held beliefs about the nature of science and the scientific process.
The book argues that the conventional wisdom that science is a strictly logical process, with objectivity the essence of scientist’s attitudes, errors being speedily corrected by rigorous peer scrutiny and experiment replication, is a mythical ideal.
Our conclusion, in brief, is that science bears little resemblance to its conventional portrait. We believe that the logical structure discernible in scientific knowledge says nothing about the process by which the structure was built or the mentality of the builders. In the acquisition of knowledge, scientists are not guided by logic and objectivity alone, but also by such nonrational factors as rhetoric, propaganda, and personal prejudice. Scientists do not depend solely on rational thought, and have no monopoly on it.
The authors present a series of case studies associated with the conduct of scientific research, from the manipulation of results to the total fabrication of whole experiments.
