BioDiversity Species Extinctions Rivets Out of Plane Wing

“As you walk from the terminal toward your airline, you notice a man on a ladder busily prying rivets out of its wing. Somewhat concerned, you saunter over to the rivet popper and ask just what the hell he’s doing.” (Ehrlich and Ehrlich, 1981)

As you walk from the terminal toward your airline, you notice a man on a ladder busily prying rivets out of its wing. Somewhat concerned, you saunter over to the rivet popper and ask him just what the hell he’s doing.
I work for the airline – Growthmania International ,” the man informs you, “and the airline has discovered it can sell these rivets for two dollars apiece.”
“But how do you know you won’t fatally weaken the wing doing that?” you inquire.
“Don’t worry,” he assures you. “I’m certain the manufacturer made this plane much stronger than it needs to be, so no harm’s done. Besides, ‘Ive taken lots of rivets from this wing and it hasn’t fallen off yet. Growthmania Airlines needs the money; if we didn’t pop the rivets, Growthmania wouldn’t be able to continue expanding. And I need the commission they pay me – fifty cents a rivet!”
“You must be out of your mind!”
“I told you not to worry; I know what I’m doing. As a matter of fact, I’m going to fly on this flight also, so you can see there’s absolutely nothing to be concerned about.”
Any sane person would, of course, go back to the terminal, report the gibbering idiot and Growthmania Airlines to the FAA, and make reservations on another carrier.”
Rivet-popping on Spaceship Earth consists of aiding and abetting the extermination of species and population of nonhuman organisms … Some of these species supply or could supply important direct benefits to humanity, and all of them are involved in providing the public services without which society could not persist….
Ecosystems, like well-made airplanes, tend to have redundant subsystems and other “design” featuers that permit them to continue functioning after absorbing certain amount of abuse. A dozen rivets, or a dozen species, might never be missed. On the other hand, a thirteenth rivet popped from a wing flap, or the extinction of a key species involved in the cycling of nitrogen, could lead to a serious accident.
In most cases an ecologist can no more predict the consequences of the extinction of a given species than an airline passenger can assess the loss of a single rivet. But both can easily foresee the long-term results of continually forcing species to extinction or of removing rivet after rivet. NO sensible airline passenger today would accept a continuous loss of rivets from jet transports. Before much more time has passed, attitudes must be changed so that no sane passenger on Spaceship Earth will accept a continuous loss of populations or species of nonhuman organisms.

Grenfell Tower Fire: Woman Dropped Baby from 9th floor; Green Cubed Entrance | Hotpoint FridgeFreezer FF 175BP White/ BG Graphite Started Fire | Aluminium Cladding: Harley Curtain Wall, Improve View for Conservationists and Luxury Flats | Grenfell Tower: Deregulation Ripping Up Red Tape.

The Grenfell Tower fire was a major fire at a 24-storey 220-foot (70 m) high tower block of public housing flats in North Kensington, west London, England which started on 14 June 2017 resulting in a high number of casualties and severe damage to the building. The Metropolitan Police Service has said that five fatalities have been formally identified and a further 74 people are missing and presumed dead, bringing the presumed total number of fatalities to 79 – the deadliest fire in mainland Britain in more than 100 years. Emergency services received the first report of the fire at 00:54 local time and it burned for around 24 hours until finally extinguished. Initially hundreds of firefighters and 45 fire engines were involved in efforts to control the fire, with many firefighters continuing to attempt to control pockets of fire on the higher floors after most of the rest of the building had been gutted. Residents of surrounding buildings were evacuated due to concerns that the tower could collapse, though the building was later determined to be structurally sound.  …..  Grenfell Tower had a major overhaul, which was completed in the year preceding the fire. Plans for renovation of the tower were publicised in 2012. Overseen by Studio E Architects, the £8.7 million refurbishment, undertaken by Rydon Ltd, of Forest Row, East Sussex in conjuction with Artelia for contract administration and Max Fordham as specialist mechanical and electrical consultants, was completed in 2016. As part of the project, in 2015–2016, the concrete structure received new windows and new aluminium composite rainscreen cladding, in part to improve the appearance of the building. Two types were used: Arconic’s Reynobond, which consists of two, coil-coated, aluminium sheets that are fusion bonded to both sides of a polyethylene core; and Reynolux aluminium sheets. Beneath these, and fixed to the outside of the walls of the flats, was Celotex RS5000 PIR thermal insulation. The work was carried out by Harley Facades of Crowborough, East Sussex, at a cost of £2.6 million. The original contractor, Leadbitter, had been dropped by KCTMO because their price of £11.278 million was £1.6 million higher than the proposed budget for the refurbishment. The contract was put out to competitive tender. Rydon’s bid was £2.5 million less than Leadbitter’s. In the hours following the fire, one of the companies involved in the refurbishment, ventilation company WITT UK, removed all references to the refurbishment from its website. It had been responsible for the smoke ventilation and extraction system fitted to the building during the refit. The page has since been returned to the company’s live site.

The building’s “cladding,” part of a multi-million pound refurbishment, is thought to have caused the fire to spread.. The cladding was part of a £8.6 million refurbishment of Grenfell Tower completed in May 2016 by Rydon, a construction firm. The planning document, published in 2014, outlined the aesthetic improvements the cladding would bring to the neighbourhood. “Due to its height the tower is visible from the adjacent Avondale Conservation Area to the south and the Ladbroke Conservation Area to the east. The changes to the existing tower will improve its appearance especially when viewed from the surrounding area.” – The Fader: Report: Grenfell Tower Fire May Have Been Caused By Panelling Installed To Make Rich Neighbors Happy. The Guardian: Complex chain of companies that worked on Grenfell Tower raises oversight concerns. The Telegraph: Grenfell Tower inferno a ‘disaster waiting to happen’ as concerns are raised for safety of other buildings. Metro: Cladding added to Grenfell Tower to ‘improve view for nearby luxury flats’. The Telegraph: Grenfell Tower refurbishment used cheaper cladding and tenants accused builders of shoddy workmanship.  The Sun: HOT AS HELL Shocking video shows how cladding panels similar to those at Grenfell Tower burst into flames in just TWO MINUTES during fire test. Raymond and Belinda Bailey owned Harley Curtain Wall who carried out the project. The Sun: CLADDING BOSSES HOLED UP Couple whose company was paid £3m for cladding refurb at Grenfell Tower are holed up at their £1m mansion. Ray Bailey and wife Belinda were director and secretary of Harley Curtain Wall. Company went bust in 2015 allegedly owing creditors more than £1.1million. HMRC accused it of ploughing £2.5m into two alleged tax avoidance schemes. Harley Curtain Wall later bought by Mr Bailey’s company Harley Facades Ltd. Harley Facades installed Grenfell Tower cladding in £2.6m contract. – Daily Mail: Bosses of company that installed Grenfell Tower cladding ‘pumped £2.5m into tax avoidance schemes’. A baby was caught by a member of the public after being dropped from Grenfell Tower as it was engulfed with flames, a witness said. Samira Lamrani said she saw a woman try to save a baby by dropping it from a window “on the ninth or 10th floor” to waiting members of the public below. – The Telegraph: Baby dropped from 10th floor of Grenfell Tower ‘caught by man on ground’.

Hotpoint Fridge Freezer FF 175BP White/ BG Graphite: Owners of FF175BP or FF175BG models should contact company after one was identified as cause of tower block blaze Hotpoint has urged owners of its fridge-freezers to check their model numbers for safety reasons after one was identified as the initial cause of the Grenfell Tower fire. A spokesman said Hotpoint was working with the authorities after its FF175BP model was found to have started the devastating blaze last week. He urged consumers who believe they own that model or the FF175BG to contact the company on a freephone hotline or visit the website to register their details. ….. Hotpoint said a total of 64,000 units were made over the three years, adding that the number of appliances in use today would be lower because of normal product obsolescence. The model was made by Indesit under the Hotpoint brand; both are part of Whirlpool, whose UK head office is in Peterborough. …. The London fire brigade concluded last year that a faulty Indesit tumble dryer was the cause of a serious tower block blaze in Shepherd’s Bush, west London. Whirlpool has been replacing or repairing an estimated 3.8m potentially faulty machines – made under the Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda Swan and Proline brands – across the UK after identifying a fire risk safety defect in November 2015, caused when excess fluff touches the heating element. It did not issue a product recall, telling customers they could continue to use their tumble dryer while waiting for the modification, provided it was not left unattended. However, it changed that advice in February this year, telling owners of the potentially dangerous machines to unplug the appliances and stop using them until they were repaired. ……Product Notice – Hotpoint Fridge Freezer: We have been made aware of a incident involving a Hotpoint branded Fridge Freezer, manufactured between March 2006 and July 2009, model numbers FF175BP (white) and FF175BG (graphite). .. How to Find Your Model Number: Data Label: [Model Number][Serial Number][Industrial Code]

DeRegulation: The Grenfell Tower inferno reveals the appalling human cost of the UK’s “light touch” regulation celebrated by successive Labour, Tory and Liberal Democrat governments. For almost 40 years, the assault on health and safety regulations has gone hand in glove with Margaret Thatcher’s notorious dictum that there is “no such thing as society.”
One of Thatcher’s first acts was to prevent local authorities from building homes on the grounds that the “market” would provide. This cleared the way for the huge growth in land and housing prices—and rampant speculation—that has turned London into the world’s fifth most expensive city. Accompanying this has been the dismantling of housing and planning regulations to reduce the cost “burden” to business. – WSWS: UK government deregulation led to Grenfell Tower inferno.  For years successive governments have built what they call a bonfire of regulations. They have argued that “red tape” impedes our freedom and damages productivity. Britain, they have assured us, would be a better place with fewer forms to fill in, fewer inspections and less enforcement. But what they call red tape often consists of essential public protections that defend our lives, our futures and the rest of the living world. The freedom they celebrate is highly selective: in many cases it means the freedom of the rich to exploit the poor, of corporations to exploit their workers, landlords to exploit their tenants and industry of all kinds to use the planet as its dustbin. As RH Tawney remarked, “Freedom for the pike is death for the minnows.” – The Guardian: With Grenfell Tower, we’ve seen what ‘ripping up red tape’ really looks like.

Internet of Things: Surveillance via Fridges, Kettles, TV’s, Phones, Computers, Credit Cards, etc; enable big data and patterns of behaviour | Hacking of IoT could enable regional blackouts, internet outages, etc.

Surveillance for Big Data Patterns: The government is already spying on us through spying on us through our computers, phones, cars, buses, streetlights, at airports and on the street, via mobile scanners and drones, through our credit cards and smart meters (see this), television, doll, and in many other ways. The CIA wants to spy on you through your dishwasher and other “smart” appliances. Slate reported in 2012: Watch out: the CIA may soon be spying on you—through your beloved, intelligent household appliances, according to Wired. In early March, at a meeting for the CIA’s venture capital firm In-Q-Tel, CIA Director David Petraeus reportedly noted that “All those new online devices are a treasure trove of data if you’re a “person of interest” to the spy community. Once upon a time, spies had to place a bug in your chandelier to hear your conversation. With the rise of the “smart home,” you’d be sending tagged, geolocated data that a spy agency can intercept in real time when you use the lighting app on your phone to adjust your living room’s ambiance. Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters – all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,” Petraeus said, “the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.” Petraeus allowed that these household spy devices “change our notions of secrecy” and prompt a rethink of “our notions of identity and secrecy.” All of which is true – if convenient for a CIA director. Last year, U.S. Intelligence Boss James Clapper said that the government will spy on Americans through IoT: In the future, intelligence services might use the [IoT] for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials. …… Why do you think there are so many buckets of cash pouring into the IoT hope-to-be-a-market? The Big Corporations don’t expect to make a big profit on the devices themselves, oh no. News flash: the Big Money in IoT is in Big Data. As in, Big Data about everything those sensors are learning about you and your nasty habits that you hide from your neighbors. The value of Big Data, after all, aren’t the data themselves. “Fred’s car told Fred’s thermostat to turn on Fred’s hot tub” doesn’t interest anybody but Fred and perhaps his hot date (if he’s lucky). The value in Big Data, you see, are in the patterns. What shows you watch. What apps you use. Which ads influence your buying behavior. The more IoT you have, the more Big Data they collect, and the more Big Data they collect, the more they know about how you behave. And once they know how you behave, they know how to control how you behave.
Hacking of Internet of Things Products: A cyberattack on toymaker VTech exposed the personal data of 6.4m children last year; it was a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of kids on the web. But technology waits for no man. Mattel’s Hello Barbie doll works the same way the Nest and Samsung voice operators do, by passing kids’ interactions into the cloud and returning verbal responses through a speaker in the doll. HereO manufactures a watch for kids with a GPS chip in it; Fisher-Price makes a WiFi-enabled stuffed animal. Security researchers at Rapid7 looked at both and found that they were easy to compromise on company databases, and in the case of the watch, use to locate the wearer. Just a few weeks ago, a security researcher found that Google’s Nest thermostatswere leaking users’ zipcodes over the internet. There’s even an entire search enginefor the internet of things called Shodan that allows users to easily search for unsecured webcams that are broadcasting from inside people’s houses without their knowledge. While people voluntarily use all these devices, the chances are close to zero that they fully understand that a lot of their data is being sent back to various companies to be stored on servers that can either be accessed by governments or hackers. Author and persistent Silicon Valley critic Evgeny Morozov summed up the entire problem with the internet of things and “smart” technology in a tweet last week: In case you are wondering what “smart” – as in “smart city” or “smart home” – means:  Surveillance Marketed ARevolutionary Technology. …. As security expert Bruce Schneier points out, the entire concept of the IoT is wildly insecure and vulnerable to hacking.  Indeed, IoT is so insecure that it allowed a massive internet outage.
IoT Network may be hacked/effected by HAARP Climate Control & Psych CCTV: Several scientists say that the Same Frequencies Used for Pain-Inflicting Crowd Control Weapons May Be the Basis of the IoT Network.
– Zero Hedge: The Whole POINT of the Internet of Things Is So Big Brother Can Spy On You. Washingtons Blog: The Same Frequencies Used for Pain-Inflicting Crowd Control Weapons Form the Foundation of the Network that Will Tie Together More Than 50 Billion Devices As Part of the Internet of Things. Wired: CIA Chief David Petraeus: We’ll spy on you through your dishwasher. The Guardian: US intelligence chief: we might use the internet of things to spy on you.

Garrett Hardin: Living within Limits or Tragedy of Commons Consequences; Voluntary Human Extinction Suicide

Garrett James Hardin (April 21, 1915 – September 14, 2003) was an American ecologist and philosopher who warned of the dangers of overpopulation. His exposition of the tragedy of the commons, in a famous 1968 paper in Science, called attention to “the damage that innocent actions by individuals can inflict on the environment”. He is also known for Hardin’s First Law of Human Ecology: “We can never do merely one thing. Any intrusion into nature has numerous effects, many of which are unpredictable.” Hardin, who suffered from a heart disorder and the aftermath of childhood polio, and his wife Jane, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease, were members of End-of-Life Choices, formerly known as the Hemlock Society, and believed in individuals choosing their own time to die. They committed suicide in their Santa Barbara home in September 2003, shortly after their 62nd wedding anniversary. He was 88 and she was 81.

Garrett Hardin combined economics, resource allocation, environmental studies, ecology, and political science into the presidential address “The Tragedy of the Commons” (1968) at a meeting of the Pacific Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He asserted that human suffering would increase if humankind failed to recognize that the planet and its resources are finite. In addition, he proclaimed that humankind did not have the right to consume resources in ways that would adversely affect posterity. This widely cited address has been reprinted more than a hundred times in twenty-seven languages and is even more relevant today than when Hardin gave it.

Hardin developed the ecological concept of “carrying capacity”; implementing his views would increase the probability of achieving sustainable use of the planet. He frequently mentioned the clash of ethical and sentimental values. Arguably, sustainability is both transdisciplinary and the ultimate environmental quest, and Hardin was its most eloquent proponent. Despite the diversity of Hardin’s publications, they emphasized seven unifying themes:

1. The human population explosion will damage the environment, deplete natural resources, and markedly degrade the quality of human life. 2. Third-world countries will find that stabilizing human population growth is exceedingly difficult, although developed countries may achieve stabilization if they control immigration. 3. Multicultural societies inevitably experience social conflict, which is exacerbated by excessive immigration. 4. Not only must the quantity of children be controlled, but also the quality of their lives. 5. Harsh penalties are the result of exceeding carrying capacity. G garrett hardin 415 6. Individuals will exploit anything that is free in order to maximize their own advantage. The cost of this exploitation is paid by society as a whole. 7. Some form of coercion will almost certainly be necessary to control exponential population growth. This coercion is justi- fied if humankind wishes to live sustainably

Hardin noted that noble intentions do not justify stupid action. His views seem hard-hearted in the short term to many people; however, Hardin felt that, to leave a habitable planet for posterity, some unpalatable short-term decisions must be made. “Feel good” social, ethical, political, and ethnic rhetoric does not lead to sustainable use of the planet.

Living within Limits makes a forceful case for dramatically changing the way we live in the world. Discussing the wide range of economic and ecological illusions we use to support our unworkable theories of sustainable population growth and resource consumption, Hardin points out the hard choices that will be thrust upon us. His clear and insightful discussion of the theoretical assumptions that underpin our current life styles is required reading for those who would truly understand the human situation. – Ecobooks, EScholarship.

Keystone Species & Biodiversity.

A keystone species is a species that has a disproportionately large effect on its environment relative to its abundance. Such species are described as playing a critical role in maintaining the structure of an ecological community, affecting many other organisms in an ecosystem and helping to determine the types and numbers of various other species in the community. A keystone species is a plant or animal that plays a unique and crucial role in the way an ecosystem functions. Without keystone species, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether. The role that a keystone species plays in its ecosystem is analogous to the role of a keystone in an arch. While the keystone is under the least pressure of any of the stones in an arch, the arch still collapses without it. Similarly, an ecosystem may experience a dramatic shift if a keystone species is removed, even though that species was a small part of the ecosystem by measures of biomass or productivity. It became a popular concept in conservation biology. Although the concept is valued as a descriptor for particularly strong inter-species interactions, and it has allowed easier communication between ecologists and conservation policy-makers, it has been criticized for oversimplifying complex ecological systems.

Ecology of Peace Commonsism Keystone Equilibrium:

Keystone Predators maintain Ecological Equilibrium:

A keystone species — like the Platteau Pika in China or the Black Tailed Prairie Dog in Arizona — has a disproportionate effect on its environment relative to its abundance, affecting many other organisms in an ecosystem, helping to determine the types and numbers of various others species in a community. Such an organism plays a role in its ecosystem that is analogous to the role of a keystone in an arch. While the keystone feels the least pressure of any of the stones in an arch, the arch still collapses without it. Ecosystems experience a dramatic loss of biodiversity & equilibrium if the keystone species is removed. Keystone Predator-prey systems enhance ecological equilibrium and balance.

A starfish is the top predator upon a community of invertebrates inhabiting tidally inundated rock faces in the Pacific Northwest. The rest of the community included mollusks, barnacles and other invertebrates, for a total of 12 species (not counting microscopic taxa). When the starfish was removed the species were reduced to 11. Soon, an acorn barnacle and a mussel began to occupy virtually all available space, out competing other species. Species diversity dropped from more than 12 species to essentially 2. The starfish was a keystone predator, keeping the strongest competitors in check. Although it was a predator, it helped to maintain a greater number of species in the community. Its beneficial impact on species that were weak competitors is an example of an indirect effect.

[Ecology of Peace] CommonSism Jurisprudence, restricting all human cultures, religions, races, etc to procreating and consuming below regional, national and international carrying capacity limits; if implemented function as a form of ‘legal /jurisprudence starfish’ Keystone predation, by eliminating the breeding and consuming predator cheaters, to (a) keep the system stable with regard to human population vis a vis other species and resources; and (b) restrict any one religion, race, or culture from overpredation; by outcompeting all other species (due to greater access to capital (consumption war predatory benefits) or human cannon fodder (breeding war predatory benefits).

Instinct is a 1999 American psychological thriller film starring Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding, Jr., George Dzundza, Donald Sutherland, and Maura Tierney. It was very loosely inspired by Ishmael, a novel by Daniel Quinn. The film examines the mind of anthropologist Ethan Powell (Hopkins) who had been missing for a few years, living in the jungle with gorillas. He is convicted of killing and injuring several supposed Wilderness Park Rangers in Africa, and is sent to prison. A bright young psychiatrist (Gooding) tries to find out why he killed them, but becomes entangled in a quest to learn the true history and nature of humankind. Eventually it is revealed that during the course of Powell’s stay with the gorillas, they accepted him as part of their group; he was attempting to protect his gorilla family when the rangers arrived and started shooting them. He gets a hearing to reveal the truth, but an attack by a vicious guard on the other prisoners causes Powell to be reminded of the killed gorillas and stop talking again. At the end of the film, Powell escapes from prison using a pen to dig out the lock on a window, and heads back to Africa. Trailer. Clip: IllusionsThe Game.

At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.” – Frank Zappa; Goodreads.

Roman Abramovich: Aluminium Wars; Steel: Keystone XL & Dakota Access Pipelines

Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich (Russian: Рома́н Арка́дьевич Абрамо́вич, born 24 October 1966) is a Russian billionaire businessman, investor, and politician. Abramovich is the primary owner of the private investment company, Millhouse LLC and is best known outside Russia as the owner of Chelsea Football Club, a Premier League football club. According to Forbes 2016 billionaire list, Abramovich’s net worth was US$7.6 billion, making him the 13th richest person in Russia, and the 151st richest person in the world. The same year, The Sunday Times estimated his net worth at ₤6.40 billion.

Acquisition of Sibneft, aluminium wars, and loans-for-shares: In 1995, Abramovich and Berezovsky acquired a controlling interest in the giant Soviet oil company Sibneft. Affiliates of Abramovich, with affiliates of Boris Berezovsky, purchased Sibneft for US$100.3 million (the company was worth US$2.7 billion at that time). As of 2000, Sibneft produced around US$3 billion worth of oil annually. Abramovich established several “fly-by-night” firms and together with his friend Boris Berezovsky used them to acquire the stock of Sibneft. As a result, the tycoon managed to pay for the company 25 times less than the market price. Bought for a total of US$200 million, Sibneft is now worth seventy five times as much. The Times claimed that he was assisted by Badri Patarkatsishvili. This acquisition was under the controversial loans-for-shares programme initiated by President Boris Yeltsin. After Sibneft, Abramovich’s next target was the aluminium industry. After privatisation the ‘aluminium wars’ led to murders of smelting plant managers, metals traders and journalists as groups battled for control of the industry. Abramovich famously emerged as the winner of the aluminium wars. The Times stated that in a BBC investigation into Abramovich’s wealth, reporter John Sweeney noted that, after the oligarch (Abramovich) emerged at the top of the trade, the murders stopped.

Oligarch tells court how he formed world’s biggest aluminium firm – without Berezovsky. It was with some initial reluctance that Roman Abramovich became involved in Russia’s notorious aluminium wars of the 1990, he told a court yesterday. “Every three days, someone was being murdered,” he pointed out. The $575m (£358m) worth of aluminium assets might seem like a side issue in the $6bn litigation he is fighting against his former friend Boris Berezovsky, the bulk of which concerns shares in Siberian oil. But as Mr Abramovich gave evidence for a fourth day at London’s Commercial Court, he shed a grim light on the shadowy world, albeit sprinkled with Gulfstream Jets and luxurious hotels. It was against a backdrop of murders, extortion and intimidation that Mr Abramovich came – reluctantly, he claimed – to buy the giant Krasnoyarsk aluminium smelter in early 2000. With the workforce striking in the streets, the sellers, among them British commodities billionaire David Reubens, wanted out. – Independent: Abramovich tells of role in aluminium wars.

Keystone & Dakota Access Steel: Believe it or not, there’s a key connection to Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, in the fight over North America’s controversial Keystone XL pipeline. In fact, a DeSmog investigation reveals that much of the steel for Keystone XL has already been manufactured and is sitting in a field in rural North Dakota. DeSmog has uncovered that 40 percent of the steel created so far was manufactured in Canada by a subsidiary of Evraz, a company 31-percent owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who is a close ally of Putin and a Trump family friend. Evraz has also actively lobbied against provisions which would mandate that Keystone XL’s steel be made in the U.S. – DeSmogBlog: How a Russian Steel Oligarch and Putin Ally Is Profiting from the Keystone XL PipelineLike Keystone XL, Much of Dakota Access Pipeline Steel Made by Russian Company Tied to Putin.

Nord Ost Moscow Theater Hostage: Man with Yellow Shopping Bag Looking for Son

The Moscow theater hostage crisis (also known as the 2002 Nord-Ost siege) was the seizure of a crowded Dubrovka Theater by 40 to 50 armed Chechens on 23 October 2002 that involved 850 hostages and ended with the death of at least 170 people. The attackers, led by Movsar Barayev, claimed allegiance to the Islamist militant separatist movement in Chechnya. They demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya and an end to the Second Chechen War. Due to the layout of the theater, special forces would have had to fight through 30 metres (98 ft) of corridor and attack up a well defended staircase before they could reach the hall in which the hostages were held. The attackers had numerous explosives, with the most powerful in the center of the auditorium. After the murder of two female hostages two-and-a-half days in, Spetsnaz operators from Federal Security Service (FSB) Alpha and Vega Groups, supported by a Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) SOBR unit, pumped an undisclosed chemical agent into the building’s ventilation system and began the rescue operation. All 40 of the attackers were killed, with no casualties among Spetsnaz; about 130 hostages died, including nine foreigners, due to adverse reactions to the gas. All but two of the hostages who died during the siege were killed by the toxic substance pumped into the theater to subdue the militants. The use of the gas was widely condemned as heavy-handed, but the American and British governments deemed Russia’s actions justifiable. Physicians in Moscow condemned the refusal to disclose the identity of the gas. Some reports said the drug naloxone was successfully used as an antidote to save some hostages, suggesting the gas was an opiate-based compound. Russia Today: Nord Ost: Three Days of Horror. USS Fitzgerald & ACX Crystal Collision: Joshua Mason, Crystal penis route, sharp turn prior to collision

17 June 2017: USS Fitzgerald and Philipine MV ACX Crystal collision: Petty Officer: Joshua Mason from Lumbarton.

USS Fitzgerald & MV ACX Crystal Collision: On June 17, 2017, USS Fitzgerald, a United States Navy destroyer, collided with MV ACX Crystal, a Philippine-flagged container ship, 50 nautical miles (93 kilometres; 58 miles) southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. Seven sailors on USS Fitzgerald died, and at least three others were injured, including the commander, Cmdr. Bryce Benson. The Japan Coast Guard and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force actively participated in the search and rescue operations, including evacuating Cmdr. Benson by helicopter. The other injured sailors were evacuated by U.S. military helicopters. The starboard (right) side of USS Fitzgerald was heavily damaged, but sailors were able to prevent it from foundering or sinking. The ship is believed to be repairable, but it will take months. Weather was clear at the time, and U.S. and Japanese inquiries will investigate the cause of the collision. The accident was the deadliest peacetime loss of life for United States military personnel since 12 Marines were killed in a helicopter collision off Oahu, Hawaii, on January 14, 2016. …. Course of MV ACX Crystal from 6/16/17 12:05 UTC to 6/17/17 3:00, showing presumptive point of collision with USS Fitzgerald at 16:30 UTC (1:30 AM Japan Time) includes phallic/penis like route.  The time of the collision is unclear. On Monday, 19 June (Japan Standard Time)—two days after the collision—the Japan Coast Guard and Nippon Yusen (NYK Line), ACX Crystal’s operator, announced that after further investigation, it had been determined that the collision occurred at about 1:30 A.M. At this time, ACX Crystal made a sudden turn, according to Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The US Navy initially maintained the event was at 2:20 A.M., when AIS data showed the cargo ship returning to the same area where it had turned earlier, and five minutes before the event was reported to the Coast Guard by ACX Crystal at 2:25 A.M.

Sharp Turn: Ship of State Military Necessity Outboard Motor

Necessity to Act to avoid Imminent Danger:

An individual driving a dinghy with an outboard motor, on a calm sea with no wind; can act with necessity to avoid the imminent danger of a collision with the reef, within the last minute, prior to collision; altering course by 90% or more to change the direction of the dingy within a few seconds, to avoid the imminent danger of collision.

The captain of a 100 foot sailing yacht, in a rough sea and a storm, must act with necessity to avoid the imminent danger of a collision with a reef, from more than a few miles away from the reef, depending on the size of the storm, maybe a few days away.

The captain of a large ship like the Titanic or a military aircraft carrier, must act with necessity to avoid the imminent danger of collision with a reef, from an even greater distance away from the reef, depending on factors of weather and capacity of engines, etc.

The national security captains of a nation, similarly can inform their nations political captain president or prime minister, that s/he must act with necessity to avoid the imminent danger of national economic and ecological collapse, from an even greater distance away from ecological overshoot, depending on factors such as the number of egological and ecologically literate citizens, international law, etc. Such national security captains can either advise their political captain President to: (i) to embark on domestic and foreign policy negotiations and education to address the root causes of the problem; namely to abolish the right to breed and consume with total disregard for ecological carrying capacity limits clauses of international law; to enable humane and orderly deindustrialization and depopulation; or (ii) to stage a false flag terrorist attack – such as WTC Attacks, burning of the Reichstag, etc – blaming some other racial or religious group for the terrorist attack, enabling the justification for war, and the opportunity to cull some of the surplus population and steal some other groups natural resources.

In a country where a majority of the citizens are educated at home, church, business, school and universities about the importance of responsible procreation and resource conservation; such national security captains can simply issue a press release, requiring the citizens to change course in their procreation and consumption behaviours to avoid economic collapse imminent danger.

In a country where the majority of citizens are educated at home, church, business, school and universities that they can breed and consume like cockroaches on Viagra, the root cause problem solving national security captains effectively have to wage covert war on ‘commit a false flag and steal some other nation’s resources’ colleagues in their own nation or other nations; and the citizens in their own nation and foreign nations; who support Masonic War is Peace ‘lets commit a false flag and steal some other race, religion or nation’s resources’ domestic and foreign policies.

Yamal Nuclear ice breaker

The NS Yamal (Russian: Яма́л) is a Russian Arktika class nuclear-powered icebreaker operated by Atomflot (formerly by the Murmansk Shipping Company). It is named after the Yamal Peninsula in Northwest Siberia; the name means End of the Land in Nenets. Laid down in Leningrad in 1986, and launched in October 1992, after the breakup of the Soviet Union, it filled its designed role of keeping shipping lanes open and also carried passengers on arctic excursions. In July of 1994 Yamal took an excursion to the North Pole, with the NSF (National Science Foundation – USA), to celebrate the official maiden voyage. While at the exact north pole (verified by GPS & Inmarsat satellite coordinates) the crew and passengers celebrated with a barbeque – the ambient temperature was −23 degrees C (−10 degrees F) (wind gusts were measured at −40 degrees C/F). Because of the ship 90/90 coordinates the ship captain (Smirnov) organized a swimming party with Mr. Will Rountree (USA) being recorded as the 1st person to ever swim there (21 Jul 94) – water temperature was below freezing, ranging from −33 to −35 degrees C (−28 degrees to −31 degrees F). The Yamal is equipped with a double hull. The outer hull is 48 mm thick where ice is met and 25 mm elsewhere and has a polymer coating to reduce friction. There is water ballast between the inner and outer hulls which can be shifted in order to aid icebreaking. Icebreaking is also assisted by an air bubbling system which can deliver 24 m³/s of air from jets 9 m below the surface. The Yamal can break ice while making way either forwards or backwards. Yamal is one of the Russian “Arktika” family of icebreakers, the most powerful icebreakers in the world. These ships must cruise in cold water to cool their reactors[not in citation given], so they cannot pass through the tropics to undertake voyages in the Southern hemisphere. UKPete: North Pole Holiday Expedition on the Nuclear Icebreaker Yamal.

Yellow Ribbon Campaign: South Korea MS Sevol Ferry sharp turn sinking

Sinking of MV SEWOL: MV Sewol was a Korean vehicle-passenger ferry, built and previously operated in Japan. It was operated between Incheon to Jeju. The sinking of MV Sewol occurred on the morning of 16 April 2014, en route from Incheon to Jeju in South Korea. The ferry capsized after making a sharp turn, while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School in Ansan City. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) north off Byeongpungdo at 08:58 Korea Standard Time. In all, 304 passengers and crew members died in the disaster. Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes after the South Korean coast guard. The sinking of Sewol resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many criticized the actions of the captain and most of the crew of the ferry. On 15 May 2014, the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, while the other 11 members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship. An arrest warrant was also issued for Yoo Byung-eun, the owner of Chonghaejin Marine, which operated Sewol, but he could not be found despite a nationwide manhunt. On 22 July 2014, police revealed that they had established that a dead man found in a field 415 kilometres south of Seoul was Yoo. Foul play was ruled out, but police say they have yet to establish the cause of Yoo’s death. On the first anniversary of the disaster, as part of commemorations for the victims of the sinking of Sewol, 4,475 people held electronic candles to form the shape of the ferry in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for largest torchlight image. The South Korea government’s Board of Audit and Inspection revealed that the Korean Register’s licensing was based on falsified documents. After the incident, the company reported that the ship was carrying 124 cars, 56 trucks, and 1157 tons of cargo. The amount of cargo carried was twice the legal limit. Voina Penis Artwork on St Petersburg Drawbridge

St. Petersburg’s historic bascule bridge has just been hilariously vandalized. The Liteiny Bridge rose its usual 67° to allow ships to pass and revealed a towering phallus to the waiting traffic. Political motive pending. This was a community effort from beginning to end: On the night of June 14th, 40 collaborators painted the 1870’s draw bridge within minutes. One was caught and arrested. In the morning, the city sent in two firefighter brigades to wash the bridge clean. Aside from web-wide delight of Russian-speaking perpetual adolescents, ru-bloggers’ response is the usual polarized squabble: “This is a digraceful! And in the cultural capital of Russia! I’m going to go to wash it off myself!” and “Naw, it’s contemporary art. I’m going to go draw five more.” Whether or not this is some sort of political commentary remains to be seen. Pranks like this are kind of our thing. When the Chess Grandmaster Gary Kasparov gave a political speech a few years ago, his opponents flew in a radio-controlled penis-copter into the conference room. The Russian renegade art-group Voina (War) often stages x-rated public stunts for the sake of political dissent. Greenpeace Resist Crane Protest: Trump Inauguration

Activists from Greenpeace unfurled a 70ft banner inscribed with the word “resist” near the White House on Wednesday morning. Speaking from a crane 300ft in the air, where she was holding a rope keeping the banner up, Pearl Robinson, 26, described her view to the Guardian: “I can see the White House, where we now have a president who doesn’t have the interests of the majority of the people.” The anti-Trump activist called the message “all-encompassing. We want Donald to know that we won’t stand for the crony capitalism, for the assault on women’s reproductive rights and the assault on the environment.” The activists are on a crane parked at a construction site about three blocks from the president’s home. United Arab Emirates Al Ain Rock Football Stadium

ABU DHABI // A unique design for a football stadium carved out of a mountainside in Al Ain has won the award for Best Future Building at an international architectural competition in London. The Rock Stadium is a planned 40,000-seater stadium built into the side of Jebel Hafeet, near the UAE/Oman border. “We are very proud of this big award, especially when you consider the amazing projects we were up against,” said Marwan Zgheib, founder of MZ Architects, the Lebanese firm that designed it. While developing the idea for the stadium, Mr Zgheib spent three days with a geologist, stone specialist, topographer and a cave expert at the site a few years ago. “The original thought was to build a stand-alone stadium but, when I saw the site, I knew it would be perfect to carve into the mountain,” he said. Not only was north-south alignment of Jebel Hafeet ideal for the orientation of a football stadium that minimises shadows and glare from the sun, natural materials from the area could be used in the construction. “The rock and the sand of the site is ideal to use in building and will give a homogeneous look to the stadium with its surroundings, as well as having a minimal impact on the environment,” Mr Zgheib said. Sustainability is one of the key concepts of the Rock Stadium, with the use of excavated material in construction as well as the sunken design limiting the desert sun’s impact and cooling costs. – The National UAE: UAE’s planned Al Ain Rock Stadium, built into mountainside, wins architecture award in London.

MOAB: Mother of All Bombs

The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB pronounced /ˈmoʊ.æb/, commonly known as the Mother of All Bombs) is a large-yield bomb, developed for the United States military by Albert L. Weimorts, Jr. of the Air Force Research Laboratory. At the time of development, it was touted as the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the American arsenal. The bomb is designed to be delivered by a C-130 Hercules, primarily the MC-130E Combat Talon I or MC-130H Combat Talon II variants. The first operational usage of the MOAB was during the 13 April 2017 airstrike against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants in Afghanistan.

The 2017 Nangarhar airstrike refers to the American bombing of the Achin District located in the Nangarhar Province of eastern Afghanistan. On 13 April 2017, the United States conducted an airstrike and used the largest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal, the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), with the goal of destroying tunnel complexes used by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP or ISIS-K). The bomb was dropped from the rear cargo door of an United States Air Force Lockheed MC-130. On 15 April 2017, Afghan officials reported that 94 ISIS-K militants, including 4 commanders were killed in the strike. Permission to use the MOAB was obtained by the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, although it was unclear how far up the chain of command his request traveled. The strike aimed to destroy tunnels being used by ISIL-KP in the Nangarhar Province, which the CIA originally created for Mujahideen fighters in the 1980s.

What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire: The Brick Building: 200 Bricks a Day; 200 Species Extinct a Day

What A Way To Go: Life at the End of Empire is a 2007 documentary film about the current situation facing humanity and the world. It discusses issues such as peak oil, climate change and the effects of global warming, population overshoot and species extinction, as well as how this situation has developed. The documentary features supporting data and interviews of Daniel Quinn, environmental activist Derrick Jensen and academics such as Richard Heinberg and many others. The tagline of the documentary is, “A middle-class white guy comes to grips with Peak Oil, Climate Change, Mass Extinction, Population Overshoot and the demise of the American lifestyle.”

Chapter 2: What a Way to Go
There was a time in my life when I was having this recurring daydream. I’d be sitting in my car, radio blaring, slowly making my way forward through a fast food drive thru. I’d get to the window and they’d hand me my drink and my burger and fries. And as I waited for my change… off in the distance… a bright flash… and a rising cloud. And as the full force of the nuclear blast washed over me, as the icy cold of my overturned Coke seeped into my jeans, I’d think to myself… what a way to go.

I spoke with Daniel Quinn about this mass extinction. He gave me a metaphor that has haunted me since.

Daniel Quinn, The Story of B

We are like people who live in a very tall building… brick building. We live on the top floor. And every day we go out, go down to the lower floors and at random we knock bricks out, take them upstairs to the top, and build higher. Every day. Downstairs, 200 bricks. Take them upstairs. And the building is perfectly stable. But it’s not going to be stable forever. Because we are attacking the structural integrity of the building. Two hundred species a day, day after day after day, year after year… And as our population increases it’s going to turn into 400 species a day, a thousand species a day. And there’s going to come a day when the system is going to collapse. Two hundred species a day!? This is calamitous.

Chapter 9: Population Overshoot

We may already be well above 200 bricks each day. And it looks to me like the building is not far from collapse. Everything in me wants to run out of the building before it comes crashing down around my ears. But where would I run? Empire now covers the planet. The building is everywhere. And almost all of us are inside of it. All of us. All six and a half billion of us. One of the hardest things to talk about is the human population explosion. The friends and neighbors I spoke with all seemed to agree that the enormous increase in human population would soon have to be reckoned with.

And so we haven’t seen climate change coming. And most people don’t see oil depletion coming. And there are other forces in the universe that play out over the long term. Exponential growth and population dynamics can both unfold over generations making them, for humans blinded by their own culture, difficult to see. William Catton explains another long-term process.

William Catton

C. Wright Mills of Columbia University – kind of a maverick – gave a nice sociological definition of fate. Fate is what happens when innumerable people make innumerable small decisions about other matters that have a collective, cumulative effect that nobody intended. Ok. That’s what’s happened when we overpopulated the world. Nobody intended to overpopulate the world. Nobody intended to pollute the oceans. Nobody intended to start the greenhouse effect.

So this is part of what I’ve come to about how we got here: a snarl of assumptions and behaviors and beliefs and stories that form the backbone of the culture of Empire, a fusion of forces that severed us from the laws of life.

Pawn: Chess: Your Move?

Pawn is is a 2013 film directed by David A. Armstrong. An old gangster, with a hard drive containing records of who he paid off, is targeted by a competition between dirty cops, internal affairs, etc. The dirty cops hire a thug to get into the safe (in the back of a diner) at midnight. But he brings his friends and goes too early for the time-release lock. Another crooked cop shows up (for uncertain reasons). The shooting ensues and during hostage negotiations the thug tries to put the blame onto an ex-con who just got out of jail, so that no one notices the real target is the hard drive. Trailer.
