Dana Pittard: Military’s Endorsement of Ecological Overshoot is Criminal
Military Endorsement of Ecological Overshoot is Criminal:
The military’s endorsement of ecological overshoot is criminal – [paraphrased] Dana Pittard; LA Times: 01 July 2013: At one Army base, a vision for a new shade of green.

Stan McChrystal: One Mission
If you think about the war on terrorism, or terror or terrorists, I wouldn’t focus on a single organization. I wouldn’t focus on ISIS as the beginning and the end of the problem. Terrorism is used as a tactic for different groups to get something done. It was originally designed to frighten us and also to inconvenience us; and the more they do both, the more you are willing to negotiate and compromise, on things that they might want. When their goals are so big, as Al Qaeda’s first said, which is something like the West out of MIddle East, thats not going to happen, but it is a good coalescing idea and that gets to the real key here. People join terrorists groups for a variety of reasons, one is because they like to be part of something. Some of the same reasons people joined Al Qaida, were the same reasons they joined the Seals, or elite forces. They want to be a part of something. The other is the idea. But the thing that worries me most about what we see in terrorism today is the ability to franchise an idea. We are living in a digital age. We are on the ground in a digital manifestation of that. The ability to transmit that idea in a franchise way. ISIS doesn’t send any money to groups in Africa, it doesn’t send any leadership, it doesn’t provide guidance, and yet those organizations accept the cloak or the name, and so ISIS with no investment gets the value of it. They are able to leverage frustrations that are different around the world. A young person in Paris that might have been radicalized might be for completely different reasons than someone in Morocco or Nigeria or San Diego. But when you find frustrations you can leverage them and when you put a cause around it, it feels better. So what we need to do is think of this as an idea problem. Ideas spring from conditions so its not sexy, its not bearded guys with fancy weapons kicking doors down thats going to end terrorism, its going to be ending some of the things that cause people to be so unhappy. Some of the economic inequity, the lack of opportunities, education. Those are the real drivers to fix it, and you got to do some things in the near term, drop some bombs and various other military activities, but that is never the solution, in my view. The solution is always far upstream and its more expensive, and sometimes it feels more frustrating, but its the only thing that sticks.
