Putin: North Korea Would ‘Eat Grass’ Before Giving Up Nukes
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that North Korea’s Kim Jong Un would have his people “eat grass” before giving up his nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. Putin was attending a meeting in Xiamen, China, of leaders of five emerging economic powers known as BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Speaking at a news conference touching on a wide range of issues, the Russian leader echoed a phrase attributed to former Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the father of Benazir Bhutto, who said in 1965 that Pakistanis “will eat grass, even go hungry” to acquire an atomic bomb. The South Asian country detonated its first nuclear device in 1998. “They would rather eat grass but will not give up the [nuclear] program if they do not feel safe,” Putin was quoted by The Associated Press as saying. He described the bombastic rhetoric being traded between Washington and Pyongyang in recent weeks as “military hysteria.” “[This] will lead to no good,” Putin said. “It could cause a global catastrophe and an enormous loss of life.”

Hurricane Irma: Like a Lawnmower from the Sky.
Take it from the hurricane historian: There has never been a tropical cyclone quite like Irma. “You’ve had storms this strong,” said Phil Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University who specializes in the history of Atlantic tropical cyclones. “But the thing that sets [Irma] apart is she stayed strong for a really long time—and she’s still incredibly strong.” Speaking before the storm made landfall, Klotzbach said two things stood out to him about Irma as historically notable: its longevity and its point of origin. Now, as of Sunday, Irma has been a hurricane for 11 days, becoming the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane since Ivan in 2004. It has stayed remarkably powerful over that time: It spent three consecutive days as a category-five storm, the longest-ever observed since satellites began tracking hurricanes in 1966. But Irma had a strange origin: It became a category-five storm in a part of the world that usually does not produce huge hurricanes. When major hurricanes have struck the continental United States in the past, they have incubated in the much warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean. That’s where Katrina grew in 2005, for instance. Irma, on the other hand, expanded to its massive size in the tropical Atlantic, east of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. “To get something east of the islands—at least from the historical record, it hasn’t happened before,” said Klotzbach. “When people in the [Leeward] Islands were saying, ‘We’ve never seen a storm this strong,’ that’s true. They haven’t.” In its sustained 185 mile-per-hour winds, and its record-breaking low pressure (914 millibars), it is the strongest storm ever measured in the open Atlantic Ocean. … Witnesses described similar scenes on the island’s Dutch half. “It’s like someone with a lawn mower from the sky has gone over the island,” said Mairlou Rohan, a European tourist visiting Sint Maarten, part of the Netherlands. – The Atlantic: Hurricane Irma: Like a ‘Lawnmower from the Sky’; Stuff NZ: Hurricane Irma flattens the Caribbean ‘like a lawn mower from the sky’.

Instinct is a 1999 American psychological thriller film starring Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding, Jr., George Dzundza, Donald Sutherland, and Maura Tierney. It was very loosely inspired by Ishmael, a novel by Daniel Quinn. The film examines the mind of anthropologist Ethan Powell (Hopkins) who had been missing for a few years, living in the jungle with gorillas. He is convicted of killing and injuring several supposed Wilderness Park Rangers in Africa, and is sent to prison. A bright young psychiatrist (Gooding) tries to find out why he killed them, but becomes entangled in a quest to learn the true history and nature of humankind. Eventually it is revealed that during the course of Powell’s stay with the gorillas, they accepted him as part of their group; he was attempting to protect his gorilla family when the rangers arrived and started shooting them. He gets a hearing to reveal the truth, but an attack by a vicious guard on the other prisoners causes Powell to be reminded of the killed gorillas and stop talking again. At the end of the film, Powell escapes from prison using a pen to dig out the lock on a window, and heads back to Africa. Trailer. Clip: Illusions, The Game.

Johnny Rico: Blood Makes the Grass Grow Green
Outrageous, hilarious, and absolutely candid, Blood Makes the Grass Grow Green is Johnny Rico’s firsthand account of fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, a memoir that also reveals the universal truths about the madness of war. No one would have picked Johnny Rico for a soldier. The son of an aging hippie father, Johnny was overeducated and hostile to all authority. But when 9/11 happened, the twenty-six-year-old probation officer dropped everything to become an “infantry combat killer.” But if he’d thought that serving his country would be the kind of authentic experience a reader of The Catcher in the Rye would love, he quickly realized he had another thing coming. In Afghanistan he found himself living a Lord of the Flies existence among soldiers who feared civilian life more than they feared the Taliban–guys like Private Cox, a musical prodigy busy “planning his future poverty,” and Private Mulbeck, who didn’t know precisely which country he was in. Life in a combat zone meant carnage and courage–but it also meant tedious hours standing guard, punctuated with thoughtful arguments about whether Bea Arthur was still alive. – Amazon, Good Reads.

Tragedy of the Commons:
The tragedy of the commons is an economic theory of a situation within a shared-resource system where individual users acting independently according to their own self-interest behave contrary to the common good of all users by depleting or spoiling that resource through their collective action. The concept and name originate in an essay written in 1833 by the Victorian economist William Forster Lloyd, who used a hypothetical example of the effects of unregulated grazing on common land (then colloquially called “the commons”) in the British Isles. The concept became widely known over a century later due to an article written by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in 1968. In this context, commons is taken to mean any shared and unregulated resource such as atmosphere, oceans, rivers, fish stocks, or even an office refrigerator.

Liudmyla Mykhailovna Pavlychenko aka Cuckoo – Russian WWII Sniper
“Gentlemen, I am 25 years old. I have already annihilated 309 fascist invaders. Do you not think, gentlemen, that you have been hiding behind my back for too long?” – Lyiudmyla Pavlychenko.
Liudmyla Mykhailovna Pavlychenko (Ukrainian: Людмила Михайлівна Павличенко, Russian: Людмила Михайловна Павличенко; July 12, 1916 – October 10, 1974) was a Ukrainian Red Army Soviet sniper during World War II. Credited with 309 kills, she is regarded as one of the top military snipers of all time and the most successful female sniper in history. Video: Lyudmila Pavlichenko speech in New York City. Battle for Sevastopol – Trailer; Music.
In one battle, enemy shells injured her and killed all the senior commanders. So she took charge. Seeing the bleeding Lyudmila bark orders, one soldier yelled “Cowards! Look at this woman. Pavlichenko has the balls of a man.” It was not all darkness, though. She worked in a shooter/spotter pair, and it is likely that this is how she met her husband. Little is known of her relationship with Sergeant-Major Leonid Kitsenko. Just that they were happy together. A spot of joy in a life short of it. … By the Siege of Sevastopol, she was so famous, the Germans knew her by name. Although they usually called her “the Russian bitch from hell”, at times they’d address her directly. ‘Lyudmila! Leave your Bolshevik friends and come and join us! … we have chocolate!” They rarely did so for long. -Rejected Princesses: Lyudmila Pavlichenko (1916-1974) The Deadliest Female Sniper in History.
During the Great Patriotic War, hundreds of thousands of Soviet women fought at the front against Nazi Germany on equal terms with men. Some of them were snipers whose phenomenal results helped swing the course of the war. RBTH presents the stories of the three most famous Soviet women snipers from the war years. 1. Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Lady Death. 2. Aliya Moldagulova. 3. Roza Shanina, The Invisible Horror. – Russia Beyond the Headlines: Lady Death and the Invisible Horror: The female face of war.
In early 1941, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was studying history at Kiev University, but within a year, she had become one of the best snipers of all time, credited with 309 confirmed kills, 36 of which were German snipers. Pavlichenko was born in 1916 in a small town in Ukraine. She was described as an independent, opinionated tomboy who was “unruly in the classroom,” as the Smithsonian notes. At the age of 14, Pavlichenko’s family had relocated to Kiev, where she worked as a metal grinder in a munitions factory. Like many young people in the Soviet Union at that time, Pavlichenko participated in OSOAVIAKhIM, a paramilitary sporting organization which taught youths weapons skills and etiquette. “When a neighbor’s boy boasted of his exploits at a shooting range,” said Pavlichenko according to the Smithsonian. “I set out to show that a girl could do as well. So I practiced a lot.” On June 22, 1941, Hitler broke ties with Joseph Stalin and German troops poured into the Soviet Union. Pavlichenko rushed to join the Soviet army and defend her homeland, but she was initially denied entry into the army due to gender. “She looked like a model, with well-manicured nails, fashionable clothes, and hairstyle. Pavlichenko told the recruiter that she wanted to carry a rifle and fight. The man just laughed and asked her if she knew anything about rifles,” Soviet-Awards.com wrote of Pavlichenko’s effort to join the military. Even after Pavlichenko presented her marksman certificate and a sharpshooter badge from OSOAVIAKhIM, officials still urged her to work as a nurse. “They wouldn’t take girls in the army, so I had to resort to all kinds of tricks to get in,” explained Pavlichenko. Eventually, the Red Army gave her an “audition” by giving her a rifle and showed her two Romanians downrange who were working with the Germans. She shot down the two soldiers with ease, and was then accepted into the Red Army’s 25th Chapayev Rifle Division. …. She became the first Soviet soldier to visit the White House, where she met with President Franklin Roosevelt and first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. Pavlichenko became angry at the US media for the blatantly sexist way they questioned her about the war. Her look and dress was criticized. When she was asked if she wore make up to battle she responded, “There is no rule against it, but who has time to think of her shiny nose when a battle is going on?” “I wear my uniform with honor. It has the Order of Lenin on it. It has been covered with blood in battle. It is plain to see that with American women what is important is whether they wear silk underwear under their uniforms. What the uniform stands for, they have yet to learn,” she told Time Magazine in 1942. Pavlichenko was one of 2,000 female snipers who fought for the Red Army in World War II, and one of the 500 who survived. – Business Insider: Meet the world’s deadliest female sniper who terrorized Hitler’s Nazi army.
Irma Beach Weddings:- Lauren Durham Michael Davis in Fatigues – Ronald & Stacey Cancelled.
Lauren Durham and Michael Davis had big plans for a beach wedding this month. Hurricane Irma had bigger plans. So instead of a poofy white dress, Durham got married in her Air National Guard fatigues, with no makeup, in a vast hangar filled with rescue vehicles in Orlando. Davis is a senior airman in the guard, like his bride, so they had called to say they’d miss their own wedding. Then on Sunday, a friend joked that they should get married during the hurricane. Dozens of people helped out, and a fellow guard member happens to be a notary and officiated. Someone even came up with a bouquet of flowers. – NOLA: Hurricane Irma cancels beach wedding for 2 first-responders, so they got married on duty.
Hurricane Irma has forced millions of people to cancel or change plans as the storm barrels toward Florida. Tracey Baranowski and her fiancé had their bags packed to head to south Florida on a flight Saturday, ready for their dream beach wedding on Anna Marie island, just off the coast. But as much as a bride-to-be plans her big day, nothing can stop Mother Nature’s plans. “Everything had to be canceled,” Baranowski said. “Very disappointed, but it’s not anybody’s fault. There is no control over it. I’ll bounce back, we’ll get through it. At least we’re safe.” – News 5: Cleveland: Hurricane Irma forces Northeast Ohio couple to cancel Florida beach wedding.
Chinese Journalist Chen Ying reports on Sichuan Earthquake wearing her Wedding Dress
When you’re a journalist and news breaks, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Take, for example, Chinese TV reporter Chen Ying, who covered the deadly earthquake that jolted China’s Sichuan province this week while wearing her wedding dress. ABC News reports that it’s unclear whether the earthquake hit in the middle of Chen’s wedding, or if it struck while she was still prepping for the ceremony. Either way, video shows her reporting on the breaking news in full bridal regalia, complete with her veil and wrist corsage. Chen interviewed local residents affected by the 7.0-magnitude quake, which hit the city of Ya’an leaving at least 188 people dead, more than 11,000 injured and another 25 missing. According to the South China Morning Post, an image of the reporter-bride soon went viral on Chinese social media, with many users lauding her “professional spirit” — and her bridal beauty. Reports indicate that Chen eventually did take a break to say her vows — and then returned to work.

DEW [Wed]: Decisive Ecological Warfare
Decisive Ecological Warfare (DEW) is the strategy of a movement that has too long been on the defensive. It is the war cry of a people who refuse to lose any more battles, the last resort of a movement isolated, co-opted, and weary from never-ending legal battles and blockades.
The information in the DEW strategy is derived from military strategy and tactics manuals, analysis of historic resistances, insurgencies, and national liberation movements. The principles laid out within these pages are accepted around the world as sound principles of asymmetric warfare, where one party is more powerful than the other. If any fight was ever asymmetric, this one is.
The strategies and tactics explained in DEW are taught to military officers at places like the Military Academy at West Point for a simple reason: they are extremely effective.
When he was on trial in South Africa in 1964 for his crimes against the apartheid regime,Nelson Mandela said: “I do not deny that I planned sabotage. I did not do this in a spirit of recklessness. I planned it as a result of a long and sober assessment of the political situation after many years of oppression of my people by the whites.”
We invite you to read this strategy, and to undertake that same long and sober assessment of the situation we face. Time is short.
