We must help break the link between spiraling population growth and poverty . . . Where they have been tried, family planning programs have largely worked. . . . Many pro-life advocates . . . contend that to condone abortion even implicitly is morally unconscionable. Their view is morally shortsighted . . . if we provide funds for birth control . . . we will prevent the conception of millions of babies who would be doomed to the devastation of poverty in the underdeveloped world. – Richard Nixon; Seize the Moment.

Profile of a Terrorist:
The motivations of those who engage in terrorism are many and varied, with activities spanning industrial societies to underdeveloped regions. Fully 60 percent of the Third World population is under 20 years of age; half are 15 years or less. These population pressures create a volatile mixture of youthful aspirations that when coupled with economic and political frustrations help form a large pool of potential terrorists. Many terrorists have a deep belief in the justice of their cause. They are tough and vicious and may have little regard for their own lives or those of their victims in attempting to achieve their goals. Others may even be hired assassins.
– Feb 86: Public Report of the Vice Presidents Task Force on Combatting Terrorism

Arguably the most authoritative work on terrorism was the February 1986 Report of the Vice President’s Task Force on Combatting Terrorism, chaired by Vice President George Bush, Sr. Yet no mention of the study has appeared in the press since September 11, 2001. On that day, the George Bush Library archivist, Melissa Walker, pulled it from her files in anticipation of interest by the media. But not until October 29th did she receive her first request. It was from CRPS. This report concludes that the root cause of terrorism is overpopulation. This determination the Vatican no doubt finds highly offensive since all of the solutions to the population problem undermine papal authority. – Stephen Mumford: The Center for Research on Population and Security.

VP GW Bush: Overpopulation & Terrorism Report

– Population Security: Is Global Overpopulation a National and Global Security Threat?.

Profile of a Terrorist: The motivations of those who engage in terrorism are many and varied, with activities spanning industrial societies to underdeveloped regions.

Terrorism and the Media: Terrorism is a form of propaganda, demanding publicity to be effective. Among the factors cited for the increases in both the number and sensational nature of incidents is the terrorists’ success in achieving wider publicity and influencing a much broader audience. Terrorists see the media’s role in conveying their messages worldwide as essential to achieving their goals. Tithe violence is spectacular, wide coverage is usually assured. Terrorist acts are newsworthy, and the media see coverage as a professional, competitive responsibility. Some in the media have claimed that intense coverage helps to resolve an incident and that putting the hostages on television may actually save their lives. The other side of this argument is that untimely or inaccurate information released by the media can interfere with resolution of an incident, foreclose options for dealing with it, or unwittingly provide intelligence information to terrorists, which prolongs an incident or endangers lives.

Study the Relationship between Terrorism and the Domestic and International Legal System: International and domestic legal systems are adequate to deal with conventional war and crime. However, on occasion, questions of jurisdiction and authority arise when it comes to terrorism. For example, there are ambiguities concerning the circumstances under which military force is appropriate in dealing with terrorism. This lack of clarity about the international law enforcement relationships and legal systems could limit governments’ power to act quickly and forcefully. The Departments of State and Justice should encourage private and academic study to determine how international law might be used to hasten—rather than hamper—efforts to respond to an act of terrorism.

New York Times: Seattle Storm take Progressive Tack with Planned Parenthood Partnership

Professional sports teams work with other businesses and organizations all the time. But the W.N.B.A.’s Seattle Storm announced on Thursday that they were wading into the current political climate in a way that contrasts with the practices of many other sports teams: a partnership with Planned Parenthood.
The ownership group of the Storm, Force 10, is planning a “Stand With Planned Parenthood” rally on July 18 in KeyArena’s West Plaza, along with continuing efforts to aid fund-raising for Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands. Five dollars from the sale of each ticket for the game that day between the Storm and the Chicago Sky will be donated to the chapter. The Storm, one of the few professional teams owned by women, will also host a fund-raising auction.
Dawn Trudeau, a co-owner of the team, said she had been frustrated by her inability to “make a meaningful impact on the national health care debate.”
“Obviously, we are progressives, so throughout this year we’ve had conversations about what was going on in the country, and what we might as individuals might do about it,” Trudeau said in a phone interview, regarding conversations she had with her partners.
She said that when one of the partners went to a Planned Parenthood event, “a light bulb went off there, that this was an organization we should do something with.”
Planned Parenthood has long been a target of Republicans and conservatives, who have sought to defund the organization.
Recent efforts by players and teams to pursue political causes have not always gone smoothly.
The decision by the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel during the national anthem before a number of games drew criticism, and he remains a free agent deep into this off-season. The Giants co-owner John Mara told Sports Illustrated thathe had received emails from fans threatening to boycott the Giants if any of the team’s players did what Kaepernick did.
