We must help break the link between spiraling population growth and poverty . . . Where they have been tried, family planning programs have largely worked. . . . Many pro-life advocates . . . contend that to condone abortion even implicitly is morally unconscionable. Their view is morally shortsighted . . . if we provide funds for birth control . . . we will prevent the conception of millions of babies who would be doomed to the devastation of poverty in the underdeveloped world. – Richard Nixon; Seize the Moment.

Louisiana state Rep. David Duke (R), running for governor, says he wants welfare mothers to be encouraged to use birth control, even if it means paying them to do so. Last week, Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan leader, was responsible for pushing through a House committee legislation aimed at reducing the number of children welfare mothers bear. The bill, which opponents called a “propaganda tool” for Duke, is expected to pass the House, but will face a tougher fight in the Senate. As originally drafted by Duke, the measure would have granted welfare mothers an extra $100 a year for preventing further pregnancy by using the Norplant birth control implant. Duke amended the bill to include all forms of birth control, including abstinence. Another lawmaker then amended the bill to increase the incentive to $100 a month. …. While committee members said the bill would accomplish little that is not already state policy under health department regulations, Duke insisted the measure is a significant step. “It will make sure these services are available and it also provides for education as to the availability of those services,” he said. Russell Henderson of the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union warned the committee that “when Mr. Duke uses the word welfare it is a code word and everyone knows what it means — black women.”

Martin Luther King – Overpopulation; Malcolm X Make It Plain Problem Solving

“Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we do not yet understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with resources we possess. What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victims. The only way our [race, class and religious resource conflict from overpopulation and overconsumption] problems can be solved. First the white man and the black man have to be able to sit down at the same table. The white man has to be able to feel free to speak his mind without worrying about hurting the feelings of the negro. The socalled negro has to feel free to speak his mind without worrying about hurting the feelings of the white man. The soldiers have to be able to feel free to speak their minds without worrying about hurting the feelings of the civilians. The civilians have to feel free to speak their minds without hurting the feelings of the soldiers. Then they can bring the EoP v WiP issues that are under the rug out on top of the table and take an intelligent approach to get the problem solved” [EoP Amended: Martin Luther King: Margaret Sanger Human Rights Award Acceptance Speech 1966; Malcolm X: Make it Plain;]

New York Times: Seattle Storm take Progressive Tack with Planned Parenthood Partnership

Professional sports teams work with other businesses and organizations all the time. But theW.N.B.A.’s Seattle Storm announced on Thursday that they were wading into the current political climate in a way that contrasts with the practices of many other sports teams: a partnership with Planned Parenthood.
The ownership group of the Storm, Force 10, is planning a “Stand With Planned Parenthood” rally on July 18 in KeyArena’s West Plaza, along with continuing efforts to aid fund-raising for Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands. Five dollars from the sale of each ticket for the game that day between the Storm and the Chicago Sky will be donated to the chapter. The Storm, one of the few professional teams owned by women, will also host a fund-raising auction.
Dawn Trudeau, a co-owner of the team, said she had been frustrated by her inability to “make a meaningful impact on the national health care debate.”
“Obviously, we are progressives, so throughout this year we’ve had conversations about what was going on in the country, and what we might as individuals might do about it,” Trudeau said in a phone interview, regarding conversations she had with her partners.
She said that when one of the partners went to a Planned Parenthood event, “a light bulb went off there, that this was an organization we should do something with.”
Planned Parenthood has long been a target of Republicans and conservatives, who have sought to defund the organization.
Recent efforts by players and teams to pursue political causes have not always gone smoothly.
The decision by the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel during the national anthem before a number of games drew criticism, and he remains a free agent deep into this off-season. The Giants co-owner John Mara told Sports Illustrated thathe had received emails from fans threatening to boycott the Giants if any of the team’s players did what Kaepernick did.
